Speculators’ euro shorts hit 2016 high as EUR/USD slides; crude longs build, gold crowded

Speculators added to bearish EUR positioning, taking net shorts to about 137.6K contracts, the highest since January 2016, as EUR/USD slid towards 17-month lows near 1.1150. Positioning metrics placed both exposure and the net positioning percentile around the 0th percentile, leaving the single currency unusually lightly owned by historical standards. Elsewhere, Japanese Yen longs retreated, though price and positioning were aligned across EUR, JPY and the Canadian Dollar, implying the latest flows have so far been reflected in market moves.

In commodities and rates-sensitive FX, non-commercial WTI net longs climbed to just over 100.3K contracts, a two-week high, while crude traded above $94 a barrel to a four-week high; exposure sat near the 10th percentile and net positioning near the 9th. The Swiss Franc showed a divergence, with shorts reduced by roughly 1.7K contracts while USD/CHF edged higher. Gold remained the most crowded long: XAU exposure held at the 85th percentile despite another price decline, while JPY recorded the strongest net-positioning reading at the 83rd percentile and GBP sat near the 0th exposure extreme.

Commitment Of Traders Positioning Analysis

An analysis of recent commitment of traders data shows that we are seeing deep conviction in currency shorts alongside heavy crowding in precious metals. In the coming weeks, derivative traders should align their strategies with these strong positioning trends while preparing for potential sharp squeezes where positioning is stretched.

Tactical Recommendations And Trade Management

We recommend maintaining a cautious bearish bias on the Euro as net speculative short positions expanded to 137,600 contracts, reaching their highest level since January 2016. With EUR/USD testing multi-month lows around 1.1150, the price action is directly confirming the positioning signal. However, because exposure sits at the absolute bottom 0th percentile, we must use tight stop-losses to protect against a violent short-covering rally if macro news turns positive.

In the energy sector, we should look to participate in the upward momentum in WTI crude oil as non-commercial net longs rose above 100,300 contracts. With prices breaking past $94 per barrel to hit four-week highs, price action and market positioning are moving in total harmony. Historical market patterns show that when net positioning sits near the 9th percentile during a price breakout, there is still ample structural room for buyers to drive prices higher.

For gold trades, we need to exercise extreme caution and consider taking partial profits on long positions. Gold exposure has climbed to the 85th percentile relative to open interest, making it the single most crowded trade across major commodities. When speculative exposure becomes this top-heavy, even minor price dips often trigger cascading stop-losses and sharp position unwinds.

We should hold off on new Swiss Franc trades until the price action aligns with the underlying positioning data. Speculators cut CHF shorts by 1,700 contracts, yet USD/CHF continued to drift higher, creating a clear mismatch between sentiment and price. We need to wait for USD/CHF to fall back below the critical 0.8323 technical level before entering positions to confirm that short covering is genuinely driving the market.

Finally, we should focus our tactical swing trades on markets where price and flow currently agree, such as the Japanese Yen and Canadian Dollar. The Yen’s net positioning sits at the 83rd percentile, giving its recent moves strong institutional backing. We will monitor these pairs closely next week to ensure this trend follow-through continues rather than devolving into a false breakout.
