Singapore PMI Uptick Extends Expansion as MAS Forecasters Lift 2026 Growth and Policy Tightening Odds

Singapore’s manufacturing PMI edged up to 51.5 in August from 51.4 in July, extending expansion to a 13th month. New orders rose to 52.0 from 51.9, while new export orders ticked up to 51.7 from 51.6 and employment to 51.2 from 51.1. Electronics remained stronger, with the PMI at 52.6 versus 52.4 previously, marking a 15th month above 50; electronics new orders increased to 53.3 from 53.1 and electronics new export orders to 52.8 from 52.6. The update also referenced ongoing supply-chain disruptions, including weaker supplier delivery performance and higher input prices.

The MAS Survey of Professional Forecasters for September showed a higher median 2026 GDP growth forecast of 5.0%, up from 3.5% in June and near the Government’s 4.5–5.5% range. Manufacturing growth was revised to 8.4% from 5.0%, while the NODX forecast rose to 17.0% from 6.1%. Inflation expectations eased, with 2026 headline inflation cut to 2.1% from 2.3% and core to 1.9% from 2.0%, against MAS projections of 1.5–2.5% for both measures this year; 45% expect a steeper SGD NEER slope in October versus 30% in June, while 55% see no change, and USD/SGD was framed within a 1.2650–1.2800 near-term range.

AI-Driven Semiconductor Boom and Trading Strategies

With Singapore’s manufacturing PMI hitting 51.5 and electronics leading at 52.6, the local economy is riding a powerful AI-driven semiconductor wave. We expect the USD/SGD currency pair to consolidate tightly between 1.2650 and 1.2800 in the coming weeks. Derivative traders should capitalize on this quiet window by deploying range-bound options strategies, such as short strangles or iron condors, targeting these precise boundaries.

Global Semiconductor Trends and Policy Catalysts

Historically, Singapore’s electronics export surges correlate with broader global chip recoveries, much like the post-pandemic tech boom that pushed the local dollar significantly higher. Current industry forecasts show global semiconductor sales on track to hit a record high of nearly $687 billion, validating the persistent local expansion we are seeing today. Given this structural support, we recommend buying protective USD/SGD put options near the 1.2800 ceiling to profit from any sudden downward shifts toward SGD strength.

The upcoming Monetary Authority of Singapore policy meeting in October is the next major catalyst, with nearly half of market forecasters predicting a steeper policy slope. A hawkish policy tightening would immediately boost the local currency, potentially breaking the USD/SGD support level of 1.2650. We suggest positioning for this outcome by acquiring out-of-the-money SGD call options ahead of the October announcement to capture the potential upside of an unexpected policy tightening.
