Scotiabank Sees USD/CAD Near Fair Value as Yield Spreads and Softer Oil Cap Loonie

Scotiabank’s strategists put USD/CAD close to fundamental fair value, with spot near 1.4115 and an equilibrium estimate of 1.4086. The Canadian Dollar has been broadly steady as the US Dollar firms, but gains are restrained by wide short-term interest rate differentials versus the US.

Softer crude oil is described as a mild headwind, and a Federal Reserve hold could permit a modest CAD improvement. However, any upside is seen as limited without a narrowing in rate spreads, which Scotiabank does not expect until later this year and only improving more meaningfully later in 2026. On technicals, USD/CAD is testing initial resistance at 1.4115/25, with further resistance levels at 1.4160 and 1.4250, while support is flagged at 1.4060.

Yield Differentials, Oil Prices, And The USD/CAD Range

We see the Canadian Dollar trading flat against a dominant US Dollar, with USD/CAD hovering around the 1.4115 level. The main drag on the Loonie remains the wide interest rate gap, as the Federal Reserve keeps rates higher for longer compared to the Bank of Canada. With the current yield spread between US and Canadian 2-year bonds sitting near a substantial 80 basis points, any immediate CAD strength will be heavily capped.

Softer WTI crude oil prices, which have slipped toward $72 per barrel, offer little support to the commodity-linked currency. For derivative traders, we expect USD/CAD to remain range-bound in the coming weeks, tightly locked between support at 1.4060 and immediate resistance at 1.4115/25. If the pair breaks higher, we anticipate a test of 1.4160, with major resistance solidifying at 1.4250.

Trading Strategies For A Range-Bound USD/CAD

Given that we do not expect a meaningful narrowing of rate differentials until late 2026, we recommend option strategies that exploit range-bound environments. Selling USD/CAD straddles or implementing iron condors within the 1.4060 to 1.4250 range can capture steady premium decay. Alternatively, we suggest buying short-term USD dips near the 1.4060 support level, targeting a return to fair value near 1.4115.
