Rupee slips as oil rallies on US–Iran tensions; USD/INR steadies near key technical levels

The Indian rupee opened lower against the US dollar at the start of a US data-heavy week, with USD/INR ticking up to about 95.43. The move came as oil prices rose after renewed US–Iran tensions, pressuring a currency tied to an economy reliant on energy imports. In early trade, the MCX crude oil contract expiring on 21 September was up 2.13% to roughly Rs 8,160, shifting sentiment towards greater near-term demand for dollars.

Hostilities flared over the weekend near the Strait of Hormuz: US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it struck Iranian rocket launchers allegedly preparing to deploy mines, and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) replied with ballistic missile strikes on two US bases in Jordan. Separately, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the 2% inflation target, after which CME FedWatch showed the probability of rates being left unchanged in September falling to 39.4% from almost 60% a week earlier. Focus now turns to August US Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday; July data showed 23K job cuts versus expectations for 80K hires. USD/INR sits near the 20-day EMA at 95.53, with RSI around 45; resistance levels include 95.53 and 96.00, while support is seen at 94.92.

Positioning Amid Energy Market Volatility

With the sudden escalation of US-Iran hostilities near the Strait of Hormuz, we advise derivative traders to position for prolonged volatility in energy markets. Since this vital chokepoint handles roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day—nearly 20% of global consumption—any prolonged disruption will keep upward pressure on crude. We recommend buying near-term call options on MCX Crude oil to capitalize on this sudden geopolitical risk premium.

Because India imports more than 85% of its crude oil, rising oil prices will inevitably stretch the country’s trade balance and weigh heavily on the rupee. Historically, a sustained $10 per barrel surge in global oil prices can widen India’s current account deficit by roughly 0.5% of GDP, which naturally depreciates the currency. We suggest traders look to establish long USD/INR futures positions if the pair convincingly breaks above its 20-day exponential moving average of 95.53.

US Policy and Option Strategies

Beyond oil, the shifting outlook for US monetary policy under a hawkish Federal Reserve means we must brace for a stronger greenback. With the probability of a September Fed rate pause dropping sharply to 39.4%, buying USD/INR call options with a strike price of 96.00 offers an attractive risk-reward ratio. We should also consider using protective put options on Indian equity index derivatives to hedge against potential capital outflows as US yields rise.

This coming Friday’s US Nonfarm Payrolls release will be the ultimate test for these positions, especially after the previous month’s weak hiring figures of just 23,000. High volatility is expected, so we recommend maintaining tight stop-loss orders on all active currency pairs to protect trading capital. For short-term option sellers, the anticipated spike in USD/INR implied volatility before Friday’s data could present excellent premium-eating opportunities.
