Rupee Hits Two-Month High as RBI Forward Shorts Swell and US Data Loom

The Indian rupee strengthened sharply on Tuesday, pushing USD/INR down to about 94.80, its lowest in two months, as markets weighed likely Reserve Bank of India action alongside firm macro data. Reuters reported persistent RBI support via spot and non-deliverable forwards markets, while RBI figures showed net short forward positions rising to a record $137bn in July from $104bn in June, a build-up that may ultimately require dollar purchases to unwind.

India’s Q2 GDP expanded 7.8% year-on-year, matching the prior pace and beating forecasts of 7.1%. The Q2 fiscal deficit narrowed to Rs 4.55trn ($47.81bn), equal to 26.8% of the FY2026-27 target, as net tax receipts lifted tax revenue to Rs 8.5trn from Rs 6.6trn a year earlier. In the US, focus turns to August ISM manufacturing PMI at 14:00 GMT, seen at 55.2 versus 55.6, and July JOLTS openings expected at 7.3m versus 7.359m, with August nonfarm payrolls due Friday. On charts, USD/INR remains below the 20-period EMA at 95.45; RSI(14) has fallen under 40, with support eyed at 94.50 and 94.19.

Short-Term Bearish Technicals and Trading Strategies

We see the Indian Rupee hitting a two-month high of 94.80 against the US Dollar, driven by strong Q2 GDP growth of 7.8% and a narrowed fiscal deficit of Rs. 4.55 trillion. For derivative traders, the immediate technical trend is bearish as the USD/INR pair remains below the 20-period exponential moving average of 95.45. We recommend short-term traders look for put options or short futures positions targeting the next support levels at 94.50 and 94.19.

Risks of RBI Intervention and Upcoming US Data

However, we caution against staying short for too long because the Reserve Bank of India’s heavy market intervention is unsustainable. The RBI’s net short forward positions reached a record $137 billion in July, up from $104 billion in June, meaning they must eventually buy back US Dollars to offset this position. This massive outstanding position suggests the Rupee’s current strength is temporary, making long-dated call options a highly attractive contrarian play for the coming weeks.

Traders should also prepare for high volatility this week with critical US economic data on the horizon. The upcoming US ISM Manufacturing PMI, expected at 55.2, and Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls will heavily influence Federal Reserve rate expectations. We advise using volatility-based strategies like straddles to capture the sharp price swings triggered by these upcoming macroeconomic announcements.
