Rupee firms on RBI support as oil prices and Red Sea tensions underpin USD/INR

The Indian rupee edged higher towards the weekend, with USD/INR slipping to about 96.30 after Reserve Bank of India intervention. Reuters reported the central bank has been active almost daily in both spot and non-deliverable forward markets, though on a measured scale. The move came as oil prices rose: the MCX crude contract expiring 20 July gained 1.16% to around Rs 7,700, close to Tuesday’s monthly high of Rs 7,832, a backdrop that typically pressures oil-importing currencies.

Geopolitical risk supported the US dollar, as Iran asked Yemen’s Houthi militia to be ready to close the Red Sea oil route if the US strikes Iranian power infrastructure. The Dollar Index (DXY) was up 0.1% near 100.80, even as markets reduced Federal Reserve tightening expectations after a softer June US CPI report. CME FedWatch put the probability of a rate rise later this month at 10.2%, down from 24.6% a week earlier; technically, USD/INR held above its 20-day EMA of 95.55, with the 14-day RSI at 62.99 and resistance near the 97.10 peak.

Trading Strategies For USD/INR Momentum

We recommend that derivative traders position for further upward momentum in the USD/INR pair by utilizing bull call spreads or going long on near-term futures. The technical structure remains highly supportive as the pair holds above its 20-day Exponential Moving Average of 95.55. If the current momentum pushes the pair past the immediate resistance, we expect a rapid test of the all-time high near 97.10.

To hedge against the threat of energy supply disruptions in the Red Sea, we suggest taking long positions on MCX crude oil contracts. Past geopolitical conflicts, such as the 2022 energy crisis, show that Brent crude can easily spike by over 20% when major maritime transit corridors are threatened. Since India imports over 80% of its crude oil, any sustained spike above the current Rs. 7,700 level will inevitably put heavy pressure on the rupee.

Risks Of Central Bank Intervention & Geopolitical Uncertainty

While the Reserve Bank of India is actively intervening in both spot and forward markets, history shows that central bank defenses can only do so much against massive global energy shocks. During the 2022 market volatility, the RBI spent over $100 billion of its foreign exchange reserves, yet the rupee still depreciated by nearly 10% against the greenback. We advise traders not to rely solely on RBI intervention to cap USD/INR gains, especially as the current scale of intervention remains measured.

We should also look at the interest rate derivative market, where the CME FedWatch tool shows only a 10.2% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike later this month. While a soft interest rate outlook usually weakens the greenback, the escalating US-Iran tensions are keeping safe-haven demand high for the US Dollar Index near 100.80. Traders can exploit this divergence by buying USD/INR call options, which are currently offering favorable risk-reward ratios due to the temporary easing of Fed rate hike fears.
