RBI steps in to shore up rupee as Brent above $95 threatens external balances and volatility

The Reserve Bank of India intervened to support the Indian rupee as rising energy costs threaten to weaken external balances and lift FX volatility. Data from iFlow show the INR is underheld compared with earlier in the year, after slipping from a well-owned position at the start of 2026. Holdings briefly moved into positive territory after a ceasefire was confirmed, but the shift did not hold.

BNY said the currency could still draw support if carry demand returns, yet elevated crude prices are expected to impose a balance-of-payments discount. The strain is described as appearing first in energy importers through weaker current accounts, imported inflation and more fragile FX conditions. Brent trading above $95 is framed as a clear trigger for intervention, with higher oil prices pushing governments and central banks into defensive action even without a new coordinated release of oil stocks.

Risks to the Indian Rupee from Rising Energy Costs

We believe derivative traders should approach the Indian Rupee with caution over the coming weeks as rising global energy costs weigh heavily on the currency. Brent crude’s recent surge past the $95-per-barrel mark directly threatens India’s economic balance, especially since the country relies on imports for over 85% of its crude oil needs. This oil spike creates a clear balance-of-payments discount, which caps the rupee’s potential to benefit from returning carry trade flows.

Derivative Strategies and the RBI’s Defensive Measures

To navigate this environment, we recommend utilizing USD/INR call options to hedge against sudden rupee weakness. However, traders must respect the Reserve Bank of India’s aggressive currency defense, supported by its massive foreign exchange reserves which currently hover around $650 billion. Because this heavy central bank intervention actively suppresses currency swings, directional futures bets may face limited upside.

Instead of positioning for a massive breakout, we suggest focusing on range-bound derivative strategies such as short straddles or iron condors. Historical intervention patterns show that the central bank’s presence typically keeps actual rupee volatility much lower than option prices imply. By selling options volatility on sharp market dips, we can capture steady premium while the central bank absorbs the worst of the oil-driven price shocks.
