Oil hits multi-month highs as rising bond yields deepen equity headwinds, IG warns

Oil prices pushed to fresh multi-month highs, while rising bond yields added to headwinds for equities, according to IG. The commentary linked the latest move in crude to widening concerns about oil-market conditions and the risk of a broader energy repricing, with references to Saudi Arabia’s production being sharply lower and to a lack of progress in US–Iran diplomacy.

The note also pointed to policymakers in the US and elsewhere as failing to damp moves in yields, and said political pressures in Washington were shaping fiscal messaging. In Europe, the European Central Bank was described as expecting higher inflation for an extended period, a stance presented as contributing to the rate backdrop. Separately, IG said Chris Beauchamp has been with the firm for four years and is a frequent media commentator, including appearances on the BBC and Sky News.

Energy Markets in Focus

We are watching Brent crude march toward $90 a barrel this September, fueled by extended OPEC+ supply cuts and heightened geopolitical tensions. To capitalize on this momentum, we should focus on buying short-term call options on WTI and Brent to ride the upward wave. Implied volatility is rising, so utilizing bull call spreads will help us limit premium costs while protecting against sudden market reversals.

Bonds, Equities, and Protective Strategies

Meanwhile, government bond yields are surging, with the US 10-year Treasury yield recently climbing past 4.4% to pressure global markets. We recommend trading this shift by purchasing put options on Treasury ETFs like TLT or shorting bond futures directly. This approach helps us profit as central banks, including the ECB, signal that interest rates must stay elevated to combat stubborn inflation.

As high oil prices and yields drag down stocks, the S&P 500 has already slid over 4% from its recent highs, signaling deep investor anxiety. To protect our portfolios, we should buy protective put options on major indices or look into VIX call options to benefit from rising market volatility. Allocating capital to options on defensive sectors, particularly energy, will also help us weather the broader equity market storm in the coming weeks.
