Reuters reported that Yemen’s Houthis are weighing the introduction of fees for commercial vessels transiting the Southern Red Sea, while also considering an exemption for China’s shipping fleet. The move follows their declaration of a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia and the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb gateway, a route linked to almost 7% of global energy supply.

Oil prices rose after the report. At the time cited, WTI was trading near its intraday high of about $82.20.

Energy Market Strategies Amid Bab El-Mandeb Disruption

With WTI oil already pushing past $82.20 due to the Bab el-Mandeb bottleneck, we recommend derivative traders position themselves for sustained upward volatility. Given that this gateway controls nearly 7% of the global energy supply, any prolonged closure or fee system will likely trigger a severe supply squeeze. We suggest buying short-term call options on WTI and Brent crude to capitalize on sudden price spikes over the next few weeks.

Opportunities And Risk Management In Shipping And Freight

Beyond energy, the maritime disruption will inevitably send ocean freight rates soaring, much like the 2024 Red Sea crisis when global shipping costs spiked by over 150% in a matter of weeks. We advise traders to look into Forward Freight Agreements (FFAs) to capture the rising cost of cargo transit. Since Chinese vessels might be exempt, we should also watch for unique arbitrage opportunities in Asian shipping derivatives.

Because geopolitical situations are highly unpredictable, we must protect our positions against sudden market reversals. We recommend using bull call spreads on crude oil to limit our downside risk while keeping the profit potential open. Additionally, taking long positions on energy sector volatility indices will help us hedge against wider market swings during this tense period.
