Mexican peso slips as inflation firms, growth undershoots and US Iran sanctions lift USD/MXN

The Mexican peso weakened against the US dollar on Monday, with USD/MXN up over 0.25% to 16.96, as markets weighed firmer inflation against softer growth and fresh US action on Iran. Mexico’s headline inflation rose to 3.26% in the first half of August from 3.1%, while underlying inflation eased to 3.94% from 3.95%. Second-quarter GDP expanded by 1.4% after a -0.3% contraction in Q1 2026, undershooting forecasts for a 1.5% gain.

US Treasury sanctions on Iran tempered support for MXN, with measures described as “unprecedented” targeting digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping. Operation Outcast sanctioned nearly 60 entities, including broker networks and shadow fleet vessels, with the stated aim of restricting funding for the IRGC. Separately, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is pursuing a trade deal with the US after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods.

On the charts, USD/MXN is at 16.9564 and remains capped by a cluster of longer-term SMAs near 17.3341 and a broken downward trendline at 17.3653. The RSI stands at 31.55, edging away from oversold. Resistance is seen around 17.33 and 17.37, while longer-term support is referenced near 15.51.

Volatility And Derivatives Strategy Outlook

We advise derivative traders to brace for increased volatility in the USD/MXN pair over the coming weeks as geopolitical tensions flare up. The latest U.S. sanctions against Iran have triggered a global risk-off wave, overshadowing Mexico’s rising headline inflation of 3.26%. Historically, emerging market currencies like the peso suffer when global risk appetite drops, making defensive options strategies highly attractive right now.

Trade And Technical Analysis Considerations

We must also closely monitor the trade fallout after the U.S. slapped 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, which places immense pressure on Mexico to secure a trade deal. During previous tariff disputes, short-term implied volatility for the peso has spiked past 15%, a pattern we could easily see repeated. Traders should consider buying out-of-the-money USD/MXN call options to hedge against a sudden breakdown in bilateral talks.

Technically, USD/MXN is holding below its key simple moving averages near 17.33, suggesting the peso’s broader strength is not entirely broken despite today’s slip to 16.96. If the pair fails to break above the 17.37 resistance level in the next few days, we recommend utilizing range-bound strategies like iron condors to collect premium. However, any hawkish surprises from upcoming central bank speeches could quickly push the pair to test deeper structural support levels.
