Markets face a dense US labour-data calendar ahead of Friday’s nonfarm payrolls (NFP), starting with JOLTS on Tuesday, ADP on Wednesday and jobless claims on Thursday. The Federal Reserve has held rates at 3.50%–3.75% after a 9–3 split, while core PCE inflation is 3.3% y-o-y and pricing implies a 68% probability of a September move. Expectations for this week’s releases include JOLTS openings of 7.451 versus a prior 7.594 mln, ADP at +70,000 versus +98,000, initial claims at +201,000 versus +197,000, and continuing claims previously at 1.782 mln. For Friday, consensus looks for payrolls of +83,000 versus +57,000, unemployment at 4.3% versus 4.2%, and average hourly earnings steady at 0.3% m-o-m and 3.5% y-o-y; meanwhile Q2 ECI rose 0.9% q-o-q and wages were 3.2% y-o-y.

Macro cross-currents include Brent up 18% since early July, reported Japan yen-defence spending of about $59 billion, and a rise in bond volatility as 30-year yields hit 19-year highs. Gold closed near $4,107/oz on 31 July, down 1.29% on the day and about 26% below its $5,627 peak from 29 January 2026, as the 10-year yield reached 4.745% and the 30-year 5.281%; levels cited are 4,190–4,220 and 4,080–4,000, with NFP thresholds framed around above 90k and below 80k. Bitcoin closed at $62,826, down 2.93% on the day and roughly 50% below its $126,296 high from October 2025, with a cited range of 59,900–67,100 and levels of 66,600–67,300 and 60,000–57,800, plus markers at 65,400, 58,400 and 56,500; ETF flows were referenced as a potential amplifier.

Fed Policy, Employment Data, and Market Bias

We are entering a highly critical week of employment data, starting with JOLTS on Tuesday and culminating in Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report. Because the Federal Reserve recently held rates at 3.50%-3.75% with a hawkish tone, we suggest that derivative traders approach both gold and Bitcoin with a bearish bias. This cautious stance is reinforced by a 68% market probability of a rate hike in September.

To understand the pressure on global markets, we point to the U.S. Treasury’s rare joint currency interventions, alongside Japan spending nearly $59 billion recently to defend the yen. At the same time, Brent crude oil prices have surged 18% since early July due to supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which keeps inflation sticky at 3.3%. This environment has pushed 30-year Treasury yields to 19-year highs, creating a challenging backdrop for non-yielding assets.

Trading Implications for Gold and Bitcoin

For gold traders, we recommend watching key support at $4,000 to $4,080 and resistance between $4,190 and $4,220. If the NFP report comes in hot—meaning well above 90,000 jobs—we expect rising yields to drag gold prices down toward the $4,000 mark. Conversely, if the job print is soft, any relief rally may still be capped because rising energy costs continue to fuel inflation expectations.

We also advise crypto traders to brace for heightened volatility as Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to rising real yields. If we see a strong NFP print, spot ETF outflows could accelerate and push Bitcoin below its critical support levels of $57,800 to $60,000. On the flip side, a very weak jobs report below 80,000 is likely needed to break Bitcoin out of its current monthly range of $59,900 to $67,100.

In the coming weeks, we must closely monitor leading indicators like the ISM Manufacturing PMI and the rising MOVE index, which signals high volatility in the bond market. Because the Fed’s forward guidance is currently vague, every piece of economic data will trigger sharper market swings than usual. Derivative traders should keep their position sizes conservative and focus on managing risk during these sudden spikes.
