Ireland’s AIB Manufacturing PMI Ticks Up in September, Signalling Sustained Factory Expansion

Ireland’s AIB manufacturing PMI edged up to 55.5 in September from 55.4 in the prior month. The reading remained above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, indicating continued growth in factory activity.

The modest rise points to slightly faster improvement in operating conditions than in August. AIB’s survey-based index therefore suggests that manufacturing momentum was sustained into September, with the headline PMI holding in expansionary territory.

Manufacturing Momentum and Economic Implications

We see Ireland’s manufacturing sector gaining steady momentum, with the latest AIB Manufacturing PMI ticking up to 55.5 in September from 55.4. This solidifies a multi-month expansion phase, showing that industrial demand remains remarkably resilient. Derivative traders should view this incremental growth as a sign of underlying economic stability in one of the eurozone’s most vital export hubs.

Derivative Strategies for Currency, Fixed Income, and Equities

With Irish manufacturing outperforming, we recommend focusing on euro-denominated currency options, particularly EUR/USD call options. Historically, robust Irish economic data supports a stronger euro, especially with eurozone inflation currently stabilizing near the European Central Bank’s 2.0% target. Buying short-term EUR/USD call options with a strike price slightly out-of-the-money could capture upside momentum over the coming weeks.

In the fixed-income derivative market, we suggest positioning for higher-for-longer yields on Irish sovereign debt using interest rate swaps. While the broader market has anticipated aggressive central bank rate cuts throughout 2026, resilient PMI data suggests policymakers may proceed more cautiously. Traders can capitalize on this by paying fixed and receiving floating on short-term euro swap contracts.

We also advise focusing on equity options tied to Irish-heavy indices, such as the iShares MSCI Ireland ETF. This ETF has shown steady resilience, and call options remain relatively cheap due to low implied volatility. Utilizing bull call spreads on these equities will allow us to limit risk while capturing the upside of this manufacturing expansion.
