Turkey’s exports rose to $21.9bn in March, up from $21.1bn in the previous period.

This is an increase of $0.8bn compared with the earlier figure.

The rise in Turkish exports to $21.9 billion for March is a bullish signal for the economy. This positive data point suggests underlying strength and could attract foreign investment. We should anticipate a potential strengthening of the Turkish Lira in the near term.

Given this report, we see opportunities in positioning for a stronger Lira against the dollar. The USD/TRY pair could face downward pressure, making put options on the pair attractive for the coming weeks. This export performance helps narrow the current account deficit, which we saw reported at $3.2 billion for February, supporting the central bank’s efforts to stabilize the currency.

For equity derivatives, this news benefits Turkish companies, especially those in the manufacturing and industrial sectors listed on the BIST 100 index. Buying call options on BIST 100 futures for May or June could be a viable strategy. We are seeing this optimism reflected in the market, with the index already up 8% year-to-date.

We must remember the extreme volatility we experienced in the Lira back in 2024, when looking at it from our current perspective. While the central bank’s policy rate, holding at 48%, has brought some stability, any geopolitical news can cause sharp movements. Hedging any long Lira exposure is therefore critical.

This positive economic data may also lead to a gradual decrease in implied volatility on Lira options. Traders could consider strategies that benefit from falling volatility, but should do so cautiously. The market still prices in significant risk, a hangover from the period of high inflation that peaked near 70% a couple of years ago.
