HSBC Sees EUR/USD Tilt Lower as ECB Maintains Cautious, Data-Dependent Stance

HSBC strategists see EUR/USD biased lower as the European Central Bank keeps a cautious, data-dependent posture and avoids signalling further rate increases. On 23 July, the ECB left rates unchanged at 2.25%, repeating a meeting-by-meeting approach. With policy guidance restrained, the bank argues the euro’s recent resilience against the US Dollar looks vulnerable.

The pair has been steady over the past month, supported by higher yields as markets price firmer inflation and tighter policy expectations linked to rising energy prices. HSBC views that underpinning as conditional on confidence that the ECB is willing to deliver further tightening. If that perception fades, attention may shift back to soft eurozone growth, higher energy costs and worsening terms of trade, factors that could weigh on the euro against the USD.

ECB Caution and Euro Vulnerability

Following the European Central Bank’s decision on July 23, 2026, to hold interest rates steady at 2.25%, we believe the Euro is highly vulnerable to a downward move against the US Dollar. The central bank’s cautious, meeting-by-meeting approach lacks the hawkish bite needed to sustain the currency’s recent stability. Derivative traders should prepare for a downward trend in EUR/USD in the coming weeks as market confidence in Eurozone yield support dissolves.

Our view is reinforced by weak Eurozone economic indicators, with regional GDP growth struggling to clear a meager 0.2% in recent quarters. Additionally, rising natural gas and energy costs are driving up import prices, which severely damages the region’s terms of trade. As these fundamental pressures mount, the temporary yield support that kept EUR/USD stable is quickly evaporating.

Trading Strategies for EUR/USD Downside

To capitalize on this expected decline, we recommend that derivative traders establish short positions on the EUR/USD pair. Buying out-of-the-money put options on the Euro offers an attractive risk-reward profile to profit from a potential drop toward the 1.0500 level. Traders can also utilize bear put spreads to lower upfront premium costs while positioning for steady depreciation over the next month.
