Hot US CPI revives December Fed hike bets as equities slide and yields stabilise after energy shock

A firmer-than-expected US CPI print has pushed market pricing back towards tighter policy, even as Fed Chair Warsh indicated the 27–28 October meeting is set for a hold. Traders are increasingly framing the path as a pause followed by a December move, with the December 9 meeting becoming the main focal point. The energy shock linked to July’s Persian Gulf escalation is described as feeding through from headline pressure into broader inflation data, shifting attention to the next CPI release due mid-November, which sits between the two policy meetings.

Derivatives pricing has adjusted quickly: the implied probability of a December hike rose from 14% to 28% on the CME FedWatch tool, and the 4.00–4.25% target range is now displacing 3.75–4.00% as the base case for December. Equities have weakened after the CPI release, with tech and AI-linked shares bearing the brunt; one cloud computing firm saw its shares fall nearly 20% on the week while its debt yields climbed to around 15%, and the Nasdaq erased half of September’s gains. US 30-year Treasury yields retreated during 12–16 October 2026 after earlier highs.

Fed Policy Path And Derivatives Outlook

We should prepare for a two-step Fed narrative in the coming weeks as markets navigate a guaranteed pause in late October followed by a potential rate hike on December 9. Recent US inflation data unexpectedly ticked up, largely driven by energy price spikes earlier this year that have now filtered into core CPI figures. With rate futures now placing nearly a 30% probability on a December rate increase—up from just 14% a few weeks ago—derivative traders must adjust to a higher-for-longer regime.

In the fixed-income space, we should keep a close eye on the bond market as US 30-year Treasury yields consolidate after reaching multi-month highs near 4.8%. The brief pullback in yields offers short-term relief, but history shows that when energy shocks feed into headline CPI, bond market volatility tends to remain elevated for at least two quarters. We suggest managing duration risk tightly, as any hawkish guidance from upcoming Fed press conferences could push long-term yields right back toward their recent peaks.

Equity And Commodity Market Implications

For equity index derivatives, particularly tech-heavy indices, we need to brace for short-term swing opportunities driven by heavy sector rotation. Tech equities have faced steep downside pressure, exacerbated by debt distress in major AI infrastructure firms where yields jumped toward 15%. However, with the spread between tech and industrial stocks stretched to two standard deviations away from its historical mean, statistical arbitragers should watch for a short-term mean-reversion bounce over the next few trading sessions.

When trading gold derivatives, we should maintain a cautious, leaning-bearish stance while the asset trades near its 20-day and 50-day moving averages. Although gold traditionally acts as an inflation hedge, its tight positive correlation with tech growth stocks and rising real interest rate expectations present a strong headwind. If dynamic resistance holds around current levels, we expect sellers to push price action lower toward major psychological support near the 4,000 zone.
