Gold steadies near $4,050 as softer dollar, Middle East risks and FOMC decision in focus

Gold rebounded from an over one-week low to trade back near $4,050 in European hours on Wednesday, with the US Dollar softer for a second day as markets await the outcome of the two-day FOMC meeting. Geopolitical developments complicated the picture: Iran’s IRGC launched a late-Tuesday ballistic missile attack on US forces, while Centcom said the missiles were intercepted and later reported US and Saudi strikes on logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq. Those strikes followed more than 30 drone attacks over the past three days by Iran-aligned groups, keeping a risk premium in place and tempering the scope for deeper USD losses.

Oil also rebounded from an over two-week low hit on Tuesday as concerns grew over energy supply disruptions tied to the US-Iran standoff over the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi missiles aimed at a Saudi oil tanker. The move revived inflation concerns and supported expectations of at least one US rate rise, creating headwinds for bullion despite its recovery. Technically, XAU/USD remains below its 200-day SMA at $4,493.65; RSI sits near 43 while MACD has edged higher, with resistance seen around $4,050 and $4,200, and support around $4,000 and $3,965.

Derivative Trading Strategy Amid Continued Volatility

We recommend derivative traders exercise caution in the coming weeks as Gold (XAU/USD) hovers near the critical $4,050 resistance level ahead of the FOMC meeting outcome. While the US Dollar has seen temporary weakness, sticky US core inflation—which remains around 2.6% in mid-2026—keeps the door open for hawkish central bank policies. Consequently, we should expect heightened volatility in gold options, making short-term range-bound strategies highly viable.

Geopolitical Risk Premium and Technical Outlook

The escalating conflict in the Middle East, marked by recent missile strikes, is actively driving up energy costs and reviving broader inflation fears. With global crude oil prices climbing back toward $85 per barrel, traders must account for a rising geopolitical risk premium that historically bolsters the US Dollar. We advise hedging long gold positions with USD call options or shorting gold futures on rallies to mitigate the risk of sudden downside reversals.

Technically, gold’s failure to break above its 200-day Simple Moving Average, which sits much higher near $4,493, signals that the broader bearish trend remains intact. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 43 confirms that momentum is still weak, meaning any short-term rallies toward $4,200 are likely to face heavy selling pressure. We suggest derivative players target bear call spreads on XAU/USD with a strike price near $4,200, while keeping a close eye on the key $4,000 support level.
