Gold rebounded on Thursday as the US Dollar gave back part of its post-Fed advance and US Treasury yields eased after an oil-led push higher cooled. XAU/USD traded around $4,370, up 2.50% on the day. The Dollar’s pullback left the US Dollar Index (DXY) near 100.05, down 0.27% after peaking at 100.37, while the 10-year yield held around 4.95% after touching 5.04%, a level last seen in 2007.

The Federal Reserve lifted the federal funds target range by 25 bps to 3.75%-4.00%, its first increase since 2023, and reiterated that inflation remains elevated relative to its 2% target. Gold had earlier dropped to $4,235, its lowest since August 7, as markets reacted to updated rate projections and comments from Chair Kevin Warsh. The dot plot showed 16 of 18 policymakers expected at least one more quarter-point rise by year-end, with the median policy-rate projection at 4.1%, while Initial Jobless Claims printed at 196K versus 208K expected and 206K previously; technically, price sits above the 50-day SMA at $4,284, tests the 100-day SMA at $4,323, and faces the 200-day SMA at $4,540, with RSI around 50 and MACD negative, while support levels include $4,150 and $4,000 and resistance extends towards $4,700.

Gold Options Trading Strategies for a Consolidation Phase

We believe derivative traders should prepare for a period of consolidation as gold hovers around $4,370 following the Fed’s recent rate hike. With the federal funds rate now at 3.75%-4.00%, the initial shock of the hawkish announcement is starting to wear off. Historically, gold option implied volatility drops significantly in the weeks following a major Fed policy shift, making premium-buying strategies expensive right now.

Since the technical charts show gold caught between its 50-day moving average of $4,284 and its 100-day moving average of $4,323, we recommend range-bound options strategies. Selling out-of-the-money iron condors or strangles will allow us to collect premium while the Relative Strength Index stays neutral near 50. Past market data shows that during similar post-hike digestion phases, gold prices remain within a tight 3% to 5% band about 70% of the time.

Managing Risks and Positioning for Breakouts

We must also protect against sudden downside risks given the strong US labor market and a resilient Dollar Index trading near 100.05. Buying protective puts with a strike price near the $4,284 support level is a smart way to hedge any long exposure. This safeguard is crucial because 16 out of 18 Fed policymakers still expect at least one more rate hike before the end of the year.

For those looking to capture a sudden breakout, we suggest setting up a long straddle to profit from sharp moves triggered by Middle East tensions. A clean break above the 200-day moving average at $4,540 or below the structural floor at $4,150 will likely spark a major trend. Historically, confirmed breakouts from these tight moving average corridors lead to an average trading volume increase of 22%, fueling strong momentum in the direction of the break.
