Gold rebounds above $4,400 as US inflation data and rate bets steer markets

Gold (XAU/USD) rebounded after dipping below $4,400 on Thursday, moving away from a one-week low but still trading under the $4,450 pivot as markets awaited US inflation data. The US Producer Price Index is due later on Thursday and the US Consumer Price Index follows on Friday, with the readings expected to steer expectations for the Federal Reserve’s 16 September rate decision and, in turn, the US Dollar (USD). Markets are pricing about a 60% chance of a rate rise at the 15–16 September meeting, a view reinforced after last Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls report. Elsewhere, US bond yields stayed firm after the Treasury said it would buy back up to $6bn of 10-year to 20-year maturities, up from $2bn, though reports said expectations had been for at least $10bn.

Oil hit a three-month high as tensions involving the US and Iran pushed up risk premia, including reports that Iran attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the US said it had sunk five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island. Rate expectations also firmed abroad, with traders fully pricing a 25-basis-point hike by the ECB and another by the BoJ at its 17–18 September meeting, while the RBA is considering a move later this month. Technically, gold is above the 200-period SMA near $4,362 but below the 100-period SMA around $4,491, with resistance near the 38.2% Fibonacci level at about $4,427; MACD is modestly positive and RSI sits near 51. Support sits around $4,362, with further levels near $4,344, $4,260 and $4,141, while upside hurdles include $4,491 and $4,530.

Volatility Strategies Amid US Inflation and Gold Price Levels

We should prepare for heightened volatility in the gold and currency markets as we approach the crucial U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) release on Friday. With gold currently hovering just below the pivotal $4,450 resistance level, derivative traders should consider utilizing volatility-based strategies like straddles or strangles to capture sharp breakouts. This is especially critical given that historical precedents show gold prices can swing by over 2% in the immediate hours following unexpected inflation data.

We advise closely monitoring the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), which has faced downward pressure but remains highly sensitive to macroeconomic shifts. Current market pricing indicates a 60% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the upcoming September 16 meeting, a sentiment heavily bolstered by recent positive nonfarm payroll statistics. If Friday’s CPI print exceeds expectations, a sudden bullish reversal in the greenback could rapidly push gold down toward the key support level at $4,362.

Geopolitical Energy Risks and Central Bank Policy Impacts

Geopolitical risks in the Middle East are also artificially inflating energy costs, with crude oil trading near three-month highs after recent maritime confrontations near the Strait of Hormuz. Because energy inflation often feeds directly into core CPI metrics, we recommend that futures traders hedge their bullion positions with long crude oil calls. Historically, prolonged shipping disruptions through this vital corridor have driven oil prices up by 10% to 15% within weeks, which would further complicate the global inflation outlook.

Finally, we must account for the synchronized hawkishness of global central banks, including a priced-in 25-basis-point hike from the European Central Bank. Rising bond yields worldwide present a strong headwind for non-yielding assets, making tight stop-losses on long gold positions essential. Traders should look to establish short-term derivative plays that exploit the divergence between the neutral-to-capped gold technicals and the unfolding macro environment.
