Gold hovers below $4,400 as weak US data offsets geopolitical tensions and Fed minutes loom

Gold traded just below $4,400, struggling to build on modest early-week gains and staying under last Thursday’s peak, its highest since 5 June. The metal remained supported by weaker US data: July Retail Sales fell 0.6%, while the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index eased to 51 in August from 55.2, reinforcing the view that the Federal Reserve may delay an immediate rate rise and weighing on the US Dollar. Offsetting that, volatile energy prices and heightened geopolitical risk limited downside for the dollar and restrained bullion’s upside, with the US preparing fresh economic measures against Iran and tensions centred on the Strait of Hormuz. Separate reports of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries helped keep oil prices firm, sustaining inflation concerns and leaving expectations of at least one Fed hike in 2026 in play.

Markets also tracked CME Group’s FedWatch, which showed roughly a 65% probability of higher US borrowing costs by year-end, keeping positioning cautious ahead of Wednesday’s FOMC Minutes. Technically, repeated failures above $4,400, described as the 50% retracement of the April–June decline, and trade below the 200-day SMA kept the broader tone capped. Momentum indicators were firmer, with RSI at 64.43 and MACD positive; upside levels included $4,506 and $4,509, then $4,666 and $4,865, while support sat at $4,290, $4,154 and $3,935.

Derivative Trading Insights and Risk Management

We advise derivative traders to exercise caution as gold struggles to break above the crucial $4,400 resistance level despite weak US economic data. Given that July retail sales dropped by 0.6% and consumer sentiment fell to 51, there is a strong fundamental case for a weaker dollar. However, we should wait for a clean breakout above the 50% Fibonacci retracement level before committing to aggressive long positions.

Geopolitical threats in the Strait of Hormuz, which channels over 20 million barrels of oil per day—roughly 20% of global liquid petroleum consumption—are keeping inflation fears highly active. These energy supply risks mean we could see sudden spikes in crude oil, which historically drives gold higher as a classic hedge against rising prices. We suggest using call options on gold to capitalize on potential volatility while defining our risk against sudden dollar rallies.

Technical Levels and Strategy Considerations

On the technical side, we are closely watching the 200-day Simple Moving Average currently sitting near $4,506. If the price fails to hold the immediate support at $4,290, we should prepare for a drop toward the $4,154 zone. For short-term derivative strategies, range-bound plays like iron condors or writing out-of-the-money puts might be highly effective until a clear directional breakout occurs.

This Wednesday’s FOMC minutes will be critical since the market is still pricing in a 65% chance of a rate hike by the end of 2026. Historically, gold prices exhibit an average intraday volatility increase of 1.5% on FOMC release days during periods of economic transition. We recommend hedging existing spot gold positions with short-dated put options to protect against any hawkish surprises from the Federal Reserve.
