Gold (XAU/USD) pared early gains on Monday and was trading around $4,163 after touching $4,217 in Asia, as positioning stayed cautious ahead of this week’s US inflation data. Prices have held in a $4,100–$4,200 range for about two weeks, with a firm US Dollar (USD) and elevated US Treasury yields limiting follow-through, while buyers have continued to appear above the $4,000 level. The US Dollar Index (DXY) was near 102.43 after an intraday low of 102.10, around levels last seen in April 2025, while the US Treasury cash market was shut for Columbus Day; the 10-year yield stood near 5.24%, down from last week’s 5.36 peak, a level last seen in 2002.

September CPI is forecast at 0.6% MoM versus 0.4%, with the annual rate seen at 3.7% from 3.4%; core CPI is expected at 0.2% MoM from 0.3%, while the yearly measure edges up to 2.5% from 2.4%. With the October 27–28 Fed meeting approaching, the CME FedWatch Tool implies an 80% probability of rates staying at 3.75%–4.00%. Energy-led inflation risks persist after the late-February outbreak of the Middle East war and renewed shipping concerns, while demand indicators include World Gold Council data showing 39 tonnes of central-bank net buying in August and $10 billion of inflows to gold ETFs in September. Technically, gold remained below the 20-day SMA near $4,225 with RSI at 43 and MACD slightly negative; resistance sits at $4,225 then $4,398, with $4,500 and $4,700 beyond, while support is near $4,052, then $4,000 and $3,950.

Gold Strategy Ahead of US CPI Data

We suggest derivative traders maintain a cautious stance over the coming weeks as gold remains trapped in a tight $4,100 to $4,200 consolidation band. With US Consumer Price Index data releasing this Wednesday, we recommend avoiding large directional positions until the market breaks out of this range. A hotter headline inflation forecast of 3.7% year-over-year could trigger immediate downward momentum across gold options and futures contracts.

If inflation numbers beat expectations, we should prepare to position for downside exposure below the key $4,052 support level. Elevated US 10-year Treasury yields, which recently peaked near a multi-decade high of 5.36%, continue to weigh heavily on non-yielding assets. Under this scenario, short-dated put options could offer an effective way to target the major $4,000 psychological threshold.

Conversely, a softer inflation print could spark a swift rally above the 20-day simple moving average near $4,225. We advise traders to look for a confirmed breakout above this resistance before entering bullish call strategies aimed at the $4,398 region. Historical data shows that CPI-driven moves in gold often generate strong directional momentum within the first 48 hours following the release.

Geopolitical and Structural Drivers

We must also account for persistent geopolitical friction in the Middle East, particularly fresh threats to shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz that keep energy costs elevated. Historically, sustained energy shocks pass through into broader inflation metrics over a one-to-two-month lag, keeping the threat of further central bank rate hikes alive. To manage this unpredictable risk, derivative positions should utilize defined risk parameters or wider stop-loss buffers.

Despite near-term volatility, strong structural demand continues to cushion the downside for longer-term bullish trades. Central banks added a net 39 tonnes of gold to their reserves in August, while global gold exchange-traded funds saw massive inflows of $10 billion in September. We recommend keeping disciplined dip-buying plans ready near the $4,000 floor, as persistent institutional buying provides strong underlying support.
