Gold edges higher as softer dollar meets Middle East risk and firmer Fed rate outlook

Gold held modest intraday gains in early European trading on Monday as the US Dollar softened, but buying momentum was limited. Geopolitical uncertainty and a firmer view on US interest rates kept the Dollar supported and reduced demand for the non-yielding metal. The US said it carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran on Sunday, after reporting the death of another American service member in Iraq, while US Central Command said the action aimed to degrade capabilities used to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones, and Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq reported a new wave of attacks.

Markets continued to price a geopolitical risk premium as the US resumed a naval blockade of Iranian ports and restricted an earlier oil-selling licence, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps monitored and sought to restrict traffic through Hormuz. Oil rose to its highest since June 12, stoking inflation concerns and lifting expectations of a Fed rate hike in 2026; Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said on Friday that rates may need to rise to curb persistent inflation. Technically, gold remained in a descending channel and below the 200-day SMA near $4,495.79, with the upper boundary around $4,056.51 and support near $3,662.99; MACD was mildly positive, while RSI stayed below 50.

Trading Strategy and Key Technical Levels

We advise derivative traders to adopt a cautious, range-bound strategy for gold (XAU/USD) over the coming weeks rather than chasing breakout momentum. The precious metal is currently testing its upper channel resistance near $4,056.51, but it remains capped well below its 200-day Simple Moving Average of $4,495.79. With the Relative Strength Index still lingering in negative territory below 50, aggressive bullish bets are premature until we see a decisive daily close above this channel hurdle.

Rate Outlook, Volatility, and Options Approaches

The main drag on gold’s non-yielding appeal is the resurgence of hawkish Federal Reserve expectations, fueled by rising energy costs as global crude prices have recently jumped back above $85 a barrel. Recent remarks from Fed officials confirm that policymakers are prepared to raise rates further in 2026 to combat this persistent, oil-driven inflation. Historically, rising interest rates put downward pressure on gold, meaning traders should prepare for potential sell-offs if inflation indicators remain hot.

To capitalize on this volatility, we recommend utilizing options strategies like bear call spreads near the $4,056.51 resistance level to capture premium while capping potential losses. For downside targets, traders can use put options to target the lower boundary of the descending channel near $3,662.99, which serves as the next major support zone. Given the unpredictable nature of geopolitical headlines from the Middle East, keeping position sizes small and employing strict stop-losses is essential to navigate sudden market swings.
