Global equities rallied as lower oil prices and easing inflation expectations underpinned risk assets, alongside resilient US data and renewed confidence in the AI capex cycle. In the US, the S&P 500 gained 1.79% to its first all-time high in two months, while the Nasdaq rose 2.59%. Tech led, though the Mag-7 added 0.73%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 6.55%; that lifted its rise since last Wednesday to 16.58%, the biggest four-day advance since 2020 and its strongest daily gain since March.

Europe also pushed deeper into record territory, with the Stoxx 600 up 0.73%, the DAX 0.77%, the CAC 0.61% and the FTSE MIB 1.26%, while the FTSE 100 added 0.20% and sits 0.3% below its peak. Asian benchmarks advanced, led by the KOSPI at 4.32% and the Nikkei at 3.32%; in China, the Shanghai Composite rose 1.34% versus a 0.99% gain in the CSI 300, and the Hang Seng edged up 0.11%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.71% after June household spending rose 0.8% MoM against 0.2% expected, while Nasdaq futures were up 0.11% versus 0.32% for S&P 500 futures after AMD guided Q3 revenue to $13bn versus $12.5bn.

Opportunities Amid Record Highs and Low Volatility

With global stock indices hitting record highs and Brent crude dropping toward the $75 mark, we see a highly supportive environment for risk assets in the coming weeks. Given that cooling inflation indicators are now hovering near 2.5%, we recommend derivative traders exploit the current low implied volatility environment. Specifically, buying near-the-money call options on the S&P 500 or major European indices looks attractive as the VIX remains comfortably below its long-term average of 19.5, currently sitting near 13.

The semiconductor sector’s staggering 16.5% four-day surge highlights intense momentum, but such rapid moves historically trigger short-term pullbacks. We suggest using bull call spreads on tech sector derivatives to capture further upside while capping premium costs against sudden profit-taking. This strategy protects your capital if high-flying chipmaker names pause to digest their massive summer gains.

Managing Risks as Market Dynamics Evolve

Falling energy prices are driving this equity rally, with global crude oil benchmarks down over 5% recently due to rising supply. To hedge broader equity portfolios, we advise taking long put positions on energy sector ETFs or oil futures. This provides an excellent counter-weight, as any sudden geopolitical spike in oil would likely depress the current stock market optimism.

With Asian markets soaring and Australian household spending beating expectations by 0.6%, regional index options present unique breakout opportunities. We favor using risk-reversal strategies on the ASX 200 and Nikkei 225 to participate in this global momentum. Historically, the latter half of August can bring lower trading volumes and sudden swings, so keeping position sizes conservative is crucial as we navigate these trades.
