GBP/USD Outlook And Key Technical Levels

GBP/USD hovered near 1.3550 on Monday, slightly firmer after three straight declines dragged it more than a cent from a six-month peak just below 1.3700. The pair remained above the 50-day EMA just under 1.3500 and the 200-day near 1.3400, while the daily Stoch RSI eased from above 90 to about 82. With no scheduled UK or US releases, trade stayed confined to a 35-pip range. Separately, US strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island and Iran’s response against US bases in Jordan helped lift Crude Oil by more than 2% and pushed longer-dated Treasury yields higher; the UK’s July CPI inflation rate was 2.9%.

The BoE held Bank Rate at 3.75% on 30 July by a 6–3 vote, with the dissenters preferring 4.00%, and its central projection showed inflation peaking around 3.2% in Q4; markets still price a hold for 17 September. After Jackson Hole, futures imply the Fed could raise rates with September near 65%, October at 92%, and December close to evenly split between one and two increases; the 29 July FOMC vote was 9–3 for hold. US data resumes with ISM Manufacturing PMI (55.2 consensus versus 55.6 prior), prices paid (72 versus 71.1), and JOLTS openings (7.3m) on Tuesday, then private payrolls (47K) on Wednesday, and Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday (58K versus -23K), with unemployment at 4.1% and earnings at 0.3% MoM. Key levels cited were resistance at 1.3600, then just under 1.3700 and 1.3750; support at 1.3500, then 1.3450 and 1.3400, with bearish framing and invalidation on a daily close above 1.3600.

Central Bank Divergence And Strategy For GBP/USD Traders

We expect the British Pound to face continued downward pressure against the US Dollar in the coming weeks, making short positions on GBP/USD the most compelling play for derivative traders. With the pair currently hovering near 1.3550, the technical setup points directly toward a test of the critical 1.3500 support level where the 50-day Exponential Moving Average sits. The daily Stochastic RSI has already rolled over from overbought territory above 90 down to 82, confirming that the upward momentum has evaporated.

We see a stark contrast in central bank dynamics where the Dollar’s hawkish momentum is heavily outweighing the Pound’s stagnant narrative. While both the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve possess three hawkish dissenters on their respective committees, markets are aggressively pricing in Fed action following the recent Jackson Hole symposium. CME FedWatch data shows rate hike expectations for the upcoming US September meeting sitting at roughly 65%, while the BoE’s September meeting remains firmly priced for a hold at 3.75%.

Geopolitical tensions are further strengthening the greenback as safe-haven flows and rising energy costs support the US currency. Recent military exchanges in the Gulf, including strikes on Larak Island, have pushed crude oil prices up by over 2% and driven US Treasury yields higher. Historically, spike events in energy markets favor the energy-independent US economy over the UK, where CPI inflation is already uncomfortably high at 2.9%.

For trading strategies in the options and futures markets, we recommend positioning for a break below 1.3500 while using 1.3600 as a strict invalidation level on a daily close. This week’s heavy US economic calendar—including ISM Manufacturing PMI, JOLTS job openings, and the critical Nonfarm Payrolls report—is highly likely to provide the catalyst needed to push the pair lower. We suggest buying short-dated GBP/USD put options or establishing short futures positions to capitalize on this asymmetric dollar-driven momentum.
