EUR/JPY slides after suspected yen intervention, with Bank of Japan decision set to steer volatility

EUR/JPY dropped 2.54% on Thursday to about 182.60, after a rapid Japanese Yen move that resembled fresh foreign-exchange intervention by Japanese authorities. The cross shed more than 400 pips within minutes, while USD/JPY sank below 161.00 and other JPY crosses fell in tandem. The rally arrived without an obvious macro trigger, keeping focus on suspected action by the Japanese Ministry of Finance to counter ongoing yen weakness.

The move echoed late-April trading, when the yen rose nearly 3% against the US Dollar after USD/JPY touched 160.72, and Reuters later cited two sources saying authorities had intervened. Attention now turns to Friday’s Bank of Japan decision, where the policy rate is expected to remain at 1%, with updated projections and Governor Kazuo Ueda’s remarks watched for timing around a potential hike in October or December. In Europe, Germany’s GDP grew 0.2% QoQ in Q2 versus 0.1% expected, and annual growth rose to 0.9%; the Eurozone expanded 0.4% in Q2 and 1% YoY, while July Economic Sentiment improved and the unemployment rate ticked up to 6.3%, as Consumer Confidence stayed at -15.9.

Yen Volatility And Intervention Strategies

With the sudden 400-pip drop in EUR/JPY and USD/JPY slipping below 161.00, implied volatility is spiking rapidly. We recommend derivative traders look at short-dated JPY call options to protect against further downside. This allows us to capture rapid shifts without catching a falling knife.

Historically, when Japanese authorities step in, like during the record 9.8 trillion yen intervention in 2024, the initial correction often triggers a multi-week trend reversal. We can leverage this pattern by using knock-out put options on USD/JPY to define our risk while targeting lower levels. Selling the rallies remains our preferred tactical play as long as intervention fears loom.

Upcoming Bank Of Japan Decision And Eurozone Outlook

Tomorrow’s Bank of Japan rate decision is the next major catalyst, with rates currently projected to hold at 1%. If Governor Ueda signals a hawkish shift toward autumn rate hikes, the massive unwinding of JPY carry trades will accelerate. We should consider long volatility strategies, such as straddles, to profit from the expected swing.

On the European front, despite steady Q2 GDP growth of 0.4%, flat consumer sentiment at -15.9 limits the Euro’s upside. This makes EUR/JPY particularly vulnerable to further drops if the Yen continues its recovery. We suggest prioritizing short EUR/JPY positions over USD/JPY in the coming weeks.
