EUR/GBP edged higher on Thursday after sliding about 0.8% over the prior three sessions, rebounding from support at 0.8530 to trade around 0.8545. The move left the near-term bearish trend intact, with the bounce described as corrective and upside attempts lacking conviction. The euro faced headwinds as oil prices rose and France’s borrowing costs increased, with government debt at its highest level since 1946. Remarks from the European Central Bank President pointing to a “measured response” to keep inflation in check also weighed, while the Bank of England was described as preparing the ground for monetary tightening.

In technical terms, the pair was near 0.8543 as it consolidated after a sharp reversal earlier in the week. The intraday Relative Strength Index sat just above 30 and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence remained slightly negative, keeping bearish momentum in place. Resistance was flagged at 0.8550 and a broken trendline near 0.8565, with 0.8585 in focus if both levels give way. On the downside, a break below 0.8530 targets 0.8515, then the 0.8480-0.8490 area.

EUR/GBP Outlook and Market Drivers

We are closely watching the EUR/GBP pair as it attempts a minor recovery toward 0.8545 after hitting key support at 0.8530. Despite this brief bounce, the broader bearish trend remains firmly in place, meaning we should treat this upward move as a temporary correction. Technical momentum indicators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) are hovering just above oversold territory, suggesting that sellers still control the overall market direction.

The Euro is facing severe pressure due to rising energy costs and growing anxiety over France’s national debt. For instance, France’s 10-year government bond yield spread over Germany’s benchmark recently widened past 80 basis points, highlighting the deep fiscal concerns in the bloc. We expect these structural weaknesses, combined with cautious guidance from the European Central Bank, to keep capping any significant upside for the common currency in the coming weeks.

Sterling Fundamentals and Tactical Trading Levels

On the other side of the channel, the British Pound remains relatively resilient as UK inflation holds close to the 2.2% mark. However, the biggest event on our radar is the upcoming UK autumn budget announcement scheduled for October 28. While a disciplined fiscal plan could trigger a relief rally for the Pound, any aggressive tax hikes might hurt long-term UK growth and quickly limit further sterling gains.

For derivative traders, we recommend watching the resistance levels at 0.8550 and 0.8565 to establish tactical short positions if the current recovery runs out of steam. If the exchange rate breaks below the immediate support of 0.8530, we see the next viable downside targets at 0.8515 and potentially down to the 0.8480 region. Managing risk tightly around these key levels will be essential as volatility is expected to pick up ahead of the late October budget.
