Doubts over US gold audit and surging China buying fuel bullish price forecasts for bullion

The US reports 8,133.5 metric tons of gold, or about 261.5 million troy ounces, with roughly 147.3 million ounces at Fort Knox and the balance at the Denver Mint, West Point Bullion Depository and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Treasury officials have said the holdings are present and accounted for, but the record often cited as reassurance is a 1974 visit in which only one of 15 vault compartments was opened to Congress and the media, and the bars were not reconciled to serial numbers, weighed or assayed. Later inventory steps and tamper-evident seals did not generate a full public audit trail, leaving gaps around reports, assay records, transaction histories and instances where seals were replaced.

Attention is also on China’s reporting. Beijing lists 2,346 metric tons and has raised declared reserves for 21 consecutive months; the People’s Bank of China reported a 15-tonne rise in June after a 10-tonne purchase in May. Research cited includes estimates of more than 48 tonnes via London OTC in May, about 80 tonnes accumulated in 2026 so far, and 570 tonnes in 2024 versus 41 reported, with total holdings possibly above 5,000 tonnes and undisclosed buying more than ten times official figures. Separately, Goldman Sachs forecasts $4,900 per troy ounce by end-2026, while China imported 173 tonnes last month, a two-year high, as Federal Open Market Committee policy remained a near-term headwind.

Skepticism Surrounding Official Gold Reserves

We must closely watch the growing skepticism surrounding official gold reserves, particularly the unverified 8,133.5 metric tons reportedly held by the United States. While government officials claim these Fort Knox reserves are fully accounted for, the lack of a genuine, independent audit since the 1970s creates deep systemic doubt. As derivative traders, we should position ourselves to capitalize on this underlying trust deficit by securing long-term bullish exposure to precious metals.

We are also tracking massive, hidden physical demand from global central banks, especially China, which is quietly accumulating far more gold than it officially reports to the public. While China officially reported moderate purchases in 2026, external data indicates they may have acquired double that amount through over-the-counter markets. This massive, hidden buying floor means that any short-term price dips in the coming weeks represent highly attractive entry points for us to buy call options.

Trading Strategies Amid Volatility and Hidden Demand

With gold prices exhibiting volatility as we head into August, Goldman Sachs’ bullish forecast of gold reaching $4,900 per ounce by the end of 2026 looks increasingly realistic. To exploit this projected upside, we recommend trading longer-dated call options, such as LEAPs expiring in late 2026. This derivative strategy allows us to bypass near-term market noise while positioning for a major macroeconomic breakout.

We should also take cues from private Chinese retail investors, who imported a staggering 173 tonnes of gold in a single month to buy the dip. In the coming weeks, we can mirror this strong physical support by writing cash-secured put options on major gold ETFs. This allows us to collect steady premium income while preparing to acquire long positions at a discount if prices slide.

The Federal Reserve’s current high-interest-rate environment may create temporary trading headwinds and sideways price action in the immediate future. However, we believe these policy pressures will eventually trigger deeper debt issues, ultimately accelerating the debasement of fiat currencies. We must use the next few weeks of market consolidation to aggressively build our derivative portfolios before the broader market fully reacts to this global rush toward hard assets.
