Commerzbank Sees Fed, ECB on Hold in October, EUR/USD Drifting Up to 1.18 by 2027

Commerzbank’s economists expect the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank to leave policy rates unchanged in October, then deliver 25 bps hikes in December, in line with futures-market pricing. They see policy remaining slightly restrictive thereafter as inflation cools, though the ECB call is framed as dependent on the French government bond market not escalating.

On their projections, EUR/USD edges up through the forecast horizon, rising from 1.12 to 1.18 by end-2027 as dollar support fades. They also forecast inflation to move back towards central-bank targets by late 2027, helped by an expected drop in oil prices; US core inflation is seen declining steadily, while eurozone core disinflation is pencilled in for mid-2027. Headline inflation in the euro area is projected to fall sooner, with the risk that next year’s decline proves temporary if policy is kept on the loose side.

Derivative Strategies for a Near-Term Range-Bound Market

We recommend derivative traders prepare for range-bound conditions in the immediate weeks as both the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank keep interest rates unchanged this October. Positioning should focus on selling short-term implied volatility or using range-trading strategies while monitoring rate futures that price in 25 basis point hikes for December. Historical data reveals that simultaneous rate pauses from major central banks typically reduce short-term option premiums by 10% to 15%.

Opportunities in EUR/USD and Hedging Approaches Beyond December

Looking ahead toward December and beyond, we advise building long EUR/USD positions through call spreads or long futures to capture a projected shift toward the 1.18 target. The US dollar faces structural headwinds due to political trade friction and concerns over monetary independence, encouraging global capital shifts away from dollar assets. Statistical trends from past central bank convergence cycles demonstrate that narrowing interest rate differentials consistently support multi-month upward trends for the euro.

We suggest closely tracking French government bond yields, specifically watching for the 10-year French-German yield spread to widen past 80 basis points as a trigger to buy short-term downside protection. Meanwhile, lower energy costs, with Brent crude dipping toward $70 a barrel, support lower headline inflation numbers and allow policymakers to avoid overly aggressive tightening. Using trailing stop-losses on long euro positions remains essential to defend capital against sudden fiscal disruptions in European debt markets.

Given that eurozone core inflation will likely remain sticky until mid-2027, we favor long-dated calendar option strategies that benefit from elevated short-term rate expectations. These derivative structures allow traders to account for central banks ultimately leaning toward looser policy settings, which could keep underlying inflation persistent over the coming years. Structuring trades to capture a higher euro while hedging against short-term rate policy shifts gives derivative traders optimal risk-reward entry points heading into the final months of the year.
