UK Commodity Futures Trading Commission data showed net non-commercial positions in sterling weakened week on week, slipping to -49.6k contracts from -44.5k. The move points to a deeper net short stance in GBP positioning over the latest reporting period.

The change represents a further 5.1k contracts of net short exposure compared with the prior week. The update captures how speculative positioning in GBP futures shifted as the reporting window closed.

Speculators Increase Bearish Bets on British Pound

We are seeing CFTC data show that speculative net short positions on the British Pound have deepened to -49.6k contracts from -44.5k. This shift indicates that large institutional traders are increasingly betting against the Sterling as we head into September. We believe derivative traders should prepare for continued downward pressure on GBP pairs, particularly GBP/USD, in the coming weeks.

Trading Strategies Amid Deteriorating Outlook

This bearish sentiment aligns with recent UK economic indicators showing a cooling labor market and CPI inflation holding close to the 2.2% mark. With the Bank of England expected to cut interest rates further towards the 4.0% level, the yield advantage that previously supported the pound is rapidly eroding. Historically, when net short positions expand past the -50k contract threshold, we often see accelerated technical selling in the spot market.

For those of us trading options, we suggest looking at GBP/USD put options with October expiries to capture this downward momentum. If you are trading futures, shorting GBP/USD with tight stop-losses just above the 1.3000 resistance level offers a strong risk-reward ratio. We recommend closely monitoring upcoming retail sales and GDP data, as any further economic weakness could push these short positions to extreme levels.
