CFTC Data Shows Oil Speculative Net Longs Slip, Raising Near-Term WTI Downside Risks

US Commodity Futures Trading Commission data showed net long positions held by non-commercial traders in oil eased to 112.4k contracts, down from 120.1k in the prior reporting period. The move points to reduced speculative length over the week.

Speculators Losing Confidence in Near-Term Oil Rally

The latest CFTC data shows that speculative net long positions in US crude oil have slid from 120.1k to 112.4k contracts. We view this reduction as a clear signal that large money managers are losing confidence in a near-term oil rally. Because of this, we recommend that derivative traders step back from aggressive bullish bets over the coming weeks.

Managing Risk During Potential WTI Price Declines

Historically, when net long positions drop in this manner, it often leads to a 5% to 8% decline in WTI prices, much like the price corrections we saw during similar speculative pullbacks in late 2023. With current global oil demand growth showing signs of stagnation, the underlying market fundamentals are struggling to support higher prices. We believe WTI is highly likely to test its key technical support floor near $72 per barrel very soon.

To manage this risk, we advise traders to pivot toward defensive options strategies like buying near-the-money protective puts or selling bear call spreads. These strategies allow us to capitalize on potential price drops while protecting our capital from sudden market turnarounds. Maintaining a flexible, short-term outlook will be crucial as we wait for speculative buyers to return to the market.
