CFTC data show yen shorts deepen as speculative bets near levels that previously triggered squeeze risks

Japan’s CFTC data showed non-commercial net positions in JPY moved further into negative territory, falling to ¥-163.4K from ¥-152.1K previously. The shift indicates an expansion in net short positioning versus the prior reporting period.

The latest reading deepens the negative stance by 11.3K contracts on the same scale, extending the move away from ¥-152.1K. The data points to increased bearish positioning in JPY among non-commercial traders as captured by the CFTC report.

Rising Speculative Short Interest And Risks Of Overleverage

Speculators are aggressively building short positions against the Japanese Yen, pushing net non-commercial positions down to -163.4k contracts. We believe this extreme bearishness is setting a dangerous trap for sellers who are overleveraging their positions. Derivative traders should prepare for a sudden, sharp reversal rather than blindly following this downward momentum.

Historical Parallels And Positioning For A Reversal

History shows that when JPY net shorts exceed the negative 150k threshold, the currency becomes highly vulnerable to explosive short squeezes. This is remarkably similar to the run-up in July 2024, when extreme short positioning peaked near -184k contracts right before a surprise Bank of Japan rate hike triggered a massive global market unwind. With positioning stretched this thin again, any hawkish signal from Japanese policymakers or a sudden drop in global equities could trigger a rapid, forced buying panic.

In the coming weeks, we suggest buying USD/JPY put options or JPY call options to cheapen the cost of positioning for a sudden Yen rally. Selling the Yen at these levels offers a very poor risk-to-reward ratio, so we must avoid holding naked short positions. Traders should tighten their stop-losses and prepare for heightened volatility, as the spring is now tightly coiled for a major trend reversal.
