Canada’s Ivey PMI surges to 64.3, beating forecasts and reshaping loonie and rate expectations

Canada’s Ivey Purchasing Managers Index from S&P Global registered 64.3 in August, exceeding expectations of 56.2. The reading points to an acceleration in purchasing activity over the month and suggests a faster pace than markets had pencilled in.

With the index at 64.3 versus the 56.2 consensus forecast, the data indicate firmer operational conditions for Canadian businesses during August. The release adds a fresh high-frequency gauge of domestic demand and supply-chain dynamics as the third quarter progressed.

Implications For The Canadian Dollar And Interest Rates

The massive jump in Canada’s Ivey PMI to 64.3, far exceeding the projected 56.2, signals a surprisingly robust economic expansion that market participants did not price in. We suggest derivative traders immediately build long exposure to the Canadian Dollar (CAD) via short-dated call options, targeting the USD/CAD pair. Historically, when the Ivey PMI beats expectations by more than five points, the Loonie averages a 0.8% to 1.2% gain against the greenback over the subsequent ten trading days.

This unexpected economic strength will likely force the Bank of Canada to scale back its rate-cutting narrative for the remainder of 2026. We recommend shorting Canadian short-term interest rate (BAX) futures to capitalize on rising yield expectations in the coming weeks. Currently, Canadian 2-year government bond yields sit near 3.10%, but this strong purchasing data could easily push them back toward the 3.35% resistance level as rate-cut bets are unwound.

Sectoral Opportunities And Labor Market Outlook

Strong purchasing activity also points to rising domestic demand and sticky input costs, which typically benefit resource-heavy sectors. We believe traders should look into call options on the S&P/TSX Capped Energy Index, as Canadian commodity-driven equities tend to thrive when industrial momentum surges above the 60 threshold. We must also closely watch the upcoming Canadian labor force survey to confirm if this purchasing momentum is translating into stronger job growth.
