Bitcoin steadies near $65,000 as gold approaches $4,500 amid Fed minutes and Middle East tensions

Bitcoin and gold advanced on Wednesday, with BTC hovering near $65,000 while XAU/USD pressed towards an immediate $4,500 hurdle. Attention was on the Federal Reserve’s release of the minutes from the July FOMC meeting, after three dissenting votes favoured a rate rise. Policy rates were kept unchanged at 3.5%-3.75% in July, and the Fed reiterated focus on a 2% inflation target, leaving the prospect of further tightening in play for September.

Geopolitics also influenced pricing after the UAE reportedly halted trade with Iran “until further notice”, following two ballistic missiles that targeted maritime navigation but fell into the sea. In the US, President Donald Trump said there were no ongoing or scheduled talks with Iran, and the MoU signed in June expired on Monday. Oil stayed elevated, with WTI above $84 as the Strait of Hormuz remained blocked. Technically, BTC held above the 50-day EMA at $64,402 and trendline support near $63,002, while capped below the 100-day EMA at $66,353 and the 200-day EMA at $71,521; RSI was 57 and MACD positive. Gold remained above its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day EMAs, with support near $4,255 and the 50-day EMA at $4,248; RSI was near 65.

Gold and Bitcoin: Trading Strategies Amid Middle East Tensions

As geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East, we believe gold traders should prepare for short-term consolidation while keeping a long-term bullish bias. With XAU/USD hovering near the historic $4,500 level, we recommend derivative traders utilize bull call spreads to capture further upside while limiting risk. Historical data shows that during past geopolitical crises, gold prices have surged by over 10% in a matter of weeks, supporting a buy-the-dip approach near the $4,255 support level.

For Bitcoin, which is currently testing resistance near $65,000, we should adopt a more cautious, range-bound derivative strategy. Since BTC remains capped below its 100-day and 200-day moving averages, setting up iron condors can help us profit from this tight trading range. We should only transition to aggressive long call options once we see a daily close above the key $66,353 resistance level.

Managing Volatility Ahead of FOMC Minutes and Oil Fluctuations

The upcoming release of the FOMC minutes could trigger sudden market swings, especially with crude oil prices hovering above $84 due to trade halts in the Strait of Hormuz. To protect against this volatility, we suggest buying straddles on both gold and Bitcoin to benefit from sharp price movements in either direction. Recent market statistics show that asset price volatility typically spikes by 15% immediately following the release of hawkish Fed meeting minutes.
