Bailey Sees Limited Second-Round Inflation as Sterling Eyes 1.37 Amid Bank Tax Plans

Bank of England Governor Bailey said there is little evidence so far of second-round inflation effects, while describing the UK economy as more resilient than expected. Money markets were steady after the remarks, with overnight index swaps still almost fully pricing a 25bp rate rise early next month. Separately, the Chancellor is reported to be preparing a Budget move to lift the corporation tax bank surcharge to 8% from 3%, aimed at bolstering public finances.

Sterling strengthened after Wednesday’s post-US CPI low, pushing GBP/USD back towards the mid-1.33 area. On the weekly chart, the rebound has produced a bullish outside-range pattern, with recent trading still anchored near the lower bound of the sideways band that has been in place since April. That configuration keeps the topside in view, with scope for a retest of 1.3650–1.3675 in the coming weeks. Initial resistance is flagged at 1.3435, aligned with the 200-day moving average.

GBP/USD Technical Outlook and Trading Strategies

We should prepare for upside momentum in GBP/USD derivatives as the pound rebounds strongly from its recent range lows. With market pricing holding firm at a nearly 100% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the upcoming central bank meeting, underlying rate differentials favor sterling. Position traders should look at bullish option structures or long spot-equivalent positions targeting the upper bound of the multi-month trading range between 1.3650 and 1.3675.

Historical Context, Fundamentals, and Risk Management

Historically, major weekly outside reversal patterns on GBP/USD have preceded sustained multi-week rallies, often yielding 200 to 300 pips of follow-through. We must watch the immediate hurdle at the 200-day moving average near 1.3435, where upside call options or breakout buy-stops can be activated once breached. UK economic resilient indicators—such as recent monthly GDP prints expanding by 0.2% alongside steady service-sector activity—provide a solid fundamental backdrop for this technical turn.

We also need to manage risk carefully around incoming fiscal policy developments, specifically potential tax adjustments targeting the financial sector. Reports of increasing the bank surcharge on corporation tax from 3% to 8% could create temporary volatility or cap gains in UK equity index derivatives, even if currency markets remain focused on interest rate spreads. Short-term option straddles or tight stop-losses below mid-week lows around 1.3250 will help hedge against budget-related noise while keeping upside exposure intact.
