Australian dollar pares losses as Fed split hold lifts dollar bias; AUD/USD eyes 0.6900 support

The Australian dollar pared earlier losses after the Federal Reserve held rates unchanged in a 9–3 vote, with three policymakers dissenting in favour of a 25-basis-point hike. AUD/USD was trading near 0.6950, down 0.32%, leaving the pair on the back foot despite the decision.

In its statement, the Fed said economic activity continues to expand at a steady pace, while uncertainty remains elevated due to the Middle East conflict. It also cited robust productivity growth and capital investment, with job gains consistent with labour force growth and the unemployment rate little changed. The decision to hold was accompanied by dissent from Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, all of whom preferred a 25-basis-point increase, as markets awaited Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference.

Derivatives Strategy and AUD/USD Volatility Outlook

We believe derivative traders should prepare for increased volatility in the AUD/USD pair in the coming weeks following the Federal Reserve’s split decision to hold rates. With three hawkish dissenters pushing for a rate hike, the bias remains tilted toward a stronger greenback. We recommend buying short-term AUD put options to protect against a potential slide below the key 0.6900 support level.

Key Levels, Macro Drivers and Trading Tactics

Historically, the 0.7000 threshold has acted as a heavy psychological barrier for the Aussie Dollar, capping major rallies since early 2023. Currently, Australia’s consumer inflation remains sticky at around 3.8%, which keeps the Reserve Bank of Australia’s cash rate elevated at 4.35%. However, the interest rate differential still favors the US Dollar as long as the Fed threatens further tightening.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to drive safe-haven flows into the US greenback, keeping the commodity-sensitive Aussie on the defensive. US capital investment grew by a robust 2.4% last quarter, proving that the American economy can easily handle these higher rates. Traders should look to short the AUD/USD pair on temporary rallies toward 0.6980, targeting a drop back to the 0.6800 level.

We must closely watch the upcoming press conference by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for any hints of future tightening. If he leans into the hawkish view of the three dissenters, implied volatility for AUD/USD options, currently sitting near a low of 8.2%, will likely spike. Using option straddles could be a smart way to trade this uncertainty without picking a directional bet too early.
