Australia Q2 CPI undershoots forecasts, easing RBA hike bets and weighing on the Australian dollar

Australia’s quarterly Consumer Price Index rose 3.8% year on year in the second quarter, coming in below the 4.1% market expectation. The reading points to a softer pace of inflation than anticipated over the period.

The outcome marks a gap of 0.3 percentage points versus forecasts, based on the latest 2Q data. The CPI figure is presented as the headline year-on-year rate for the quarter.

Interest Rate Expectations And AUD Implications

With Australia’s second-quarter inflation coming in softer than expected at 3.8%, the immediate pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia to raise interest rates has evaporated. We recommend derivative traders buy ASX 30-day Interbank Cash Rate Futures, as the market rapidly prices out any remaining chances of a rate hike in the upcoming August meeting. Historically, similar downside inflation surprises have led to a sharp drop in implied yields, making long positions on these interest rate contracts highly profitable in the short term.

In the currency markets, we expect the Australian Dollar to face downward pressure as yield differentials narrow against other major currencies. We advise shorting AUD/USD or buying Aussie dollar put options to capitalize on this monetary policy relief. Past market reactions show that the AUD often drops by 1% to 1.5% within days of a lower-than-expected quarterly CPI print.

Bullish Outlook For Australian Equities

For equity derivative traders, we see a strong bullish setup for ASX 200 index options and SPI 200 futures. Lower inflation relieves pressure on corporate profit margins and consumer spending, which typically drives Australian stocks higher. We suggest positioning for a near-term stock market rally by purchasing out-of-the-money call options on the ASX 200 expiring in late August.
