AUD/USD slips towards 0.7000 as US dollar firms, China PMI softens and RBA stays hawkish

AUD/USD slid to about 0.7000 on Monday, down 0.30% on the day, as a firmer US Dollar offset support for the Australian Dollar from China. China’s RatingDog Manufacturing PMI eased to 50.9 in July from 51.7 in June and fell short of the 51.5 consensus, although it stayed above the 50 mark that indicates expansion. Separately, RBA communication kept focus on a restrictive policy stance: Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter linked the recent inflation moderation mainly to lower fuel prices, while underlying pressures were described as above the central bank’s 2%-3% target range, leaving markets pricing the possibility of another rate rise this year.

The US Dollar regained ground as markets weighed conflicting US-Iran messages over negotiations covering Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Risk appetite remained restrained, while attention also fell on OPEC+ plans to lift output in September, a development tied to softer oil prices and reduced expectations of further Fed tightening. Next on the agenda is the ISM Manufacturing PMI later Monday, with Friday’s NFP report expected to add to the policy outlook.

Derivative Strategies Amid AUD Weakness and China Slowdown

With AUD/USD dropping back to the crucial 0.7000 level on August 3, we recommend derivative traders buy short-term put options on the Australian Dollar. This hedge is vital as China’s Manufacturing PMI fell to 50.9, confirming a slowdown in Australia’s largest export market. Historically, when Chinese industrial data misses forecasts like this, the AUD faces sustained downward pressure for at least two to three weeks.

We expect high volatility in the coming days due to the conflicting reports surrounding US-Iran relations. Because of these unpredictable geopolitical tensions, trading a long straddle option strategy on the US Dollar Index is highly practical right now. This allows us to profit from sharp market swings regardless of which direction the headlines push the currency.

Commodity Price Trends and Policy Divergence Trading Tactics

The recent OPEC+ decision to increase crude production has already pushed oil prices down, with Brent crude trading around $74 per barrel. We should look at selling AUD/USD futures contracts to capitalize on this weakening commodity backdrop. Lower energy prices also reduce global inflationary pressures, which could soon alter the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path.

Even though the Reserve Bank of Australia keeps hinting at rate hikes with underlying inflation sticking above their 3% target, the rebounding US Dollar remains dominant. Traders can exploit this policy divergence by setting up bear call spreads on AUD/USD. This strategy limits our risk while capturing steady gains as the US economic data continues to show resilience.

As we wait for the US ISM Manufacturing PMI today and the crucial Nonfarm Payrolls report on Friday, trading volumes are likely to spike. We advise setting tight stop-loss orders on all active currency futures to protect capital from sudden spikes in volatility. Keeping leverage low during this heavy data week will help us safely navigate these sudden market shifts.
