AUD/USD slips as Fed hike bets and oil volatility lift dollar, soft Australian inflation weighs

AUD/USD pared an early Asian uptick that reached 0.6965, as demand for the US Dollar resurfaced on dip-buying. The pair stayed above an over two-week low set on Wednesday but traded in the mid-0.6900s, down less than 0.10% on the day. Market pricing has tilted towards a US Federal Reserve rate increase in 2026, while higher oil-price volatility linked to escalating US-Iran tensions supported the safe-haven Greenback. Separately, softer Australian consumer inflation data prompted an unwinding of near-term Reserve Bank of Australia rate-hike bets, weighing on the Australian Dollar and limiting AUD/USD.

Technically, repeated setbacks near 0.7020 and an overnight close below the 100-period EMA on the four-hour chart keep the bias skewed lower. The RSI is below 50 and MACD remains marginally under zero, pointing to muted bullish momentum. Further downside would likely require a break under 0.6925 and the 200-day SMA near 0.6900, with potential moves towards 0.6865, then 0.6835, and the March year-to-date low near 0.6800. On the upside, the 100-period EMA at 0.6974 is the first resistance.

Fundamental Factors Supporting a Bearish Outlook

We are closely watching the AUD/USD pair as it struggles to hold ground near 0.6950, signaling that derivative traders should prepare for a downward trend in the coming weeks. With the US Federal Reserve keeping interest rates elevated to combat inflation and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushing oil prices higher, the US Dollar is reclaiming its safe-haven status. Meanwhile, Australia’s inflation rate recently cooled more than expected, reducing the likelihood of any near-term rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Strategic Approaches for Derivative Traders

To capitalize on this momentum, we suggest derivative traders focus on selling short-term rallies as long as the pair remains capped below the 100-period Exponential Moving Average of 0.6974. For those trading options, buying put options with strike prices targeting 0.6900 or 0.6850 could offer a low-risk way to benefit from the expected decline. Historically, when the Australian Dollar loses its interest rate advantage over the Greenback, we see sustained downward pressure that favors these bearish positions.

Before committing to heavier short positions, we advise waiting for a clean break below the key support levels of 0.6925 and the 200-day Simple Moving Average at 0.6900. If these levels fail to hold, we expect a rapid drop toward the 0.6865 region, with further potential to slide to 0.6800. Keeping a close eye on upcoming US employment data and global energy reports will be essential, as any sudden spikes in volatility could trigger sharp, short-lived spikes that we can use to enter new short contracts.
