US weekly crude oil inventories, as reported by the API, rose by 9.072M for the week to 7 August. That compared with market expectations for a 0.5M draw.

The release pointed to a larger-than-anticipated build in US crude stockpiles over the period. API data are watched for near-term supply-demand signals ahead of official government inventory figures.

Unprecedented Build Signals Weakening Demand And Price Risks

We are looking at a massive, unexpected crude build of 9.072 million barrels, which completely shatters the consensus forecast of a 0.5 million barrel draw. This surprising surplus, occurring right at the tail end of the peak summer driving season, strongly signals that domestic demand is cooling faster than anticipated. Historically, August inventory builds of this magnitude have triggered sharp downward pressure on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices.

Short-Term Trading Strategies And Market Outlook

We advise derivative traders to immediately position for near-term downside by purchasing out-of-the-money put options on WTI front-month contracts. When actual inventories overshoot expectations by this margin, crude prices have historically fallen by 3% to 5% within the subsequent two weeks as the physical market adjusts. Going short on futures or utilizing bear put spreads will allow us to capitalize on this bearish momentum as the market digests the upcoming official EIA data.

We also expect implied volatility in energy options to spike, making premium-selling strategies like bear call spreads highly attractive. Additionally, traders should monitor the crude-to-product crack spreads, as high crude inventories combined with stalling refinery utilization typically squeeze refining margins. We should look to short gasoline futures alongside crude, as the product demand side of the equation is clearly faltering.

Over the next few weeks, we must watch if this inventory build translates into a structural trend or if it is just a temporary shipping bottleneck. If upcoming reports confirm this massive supply overhang, WTI could easily break below its key support levels, potentially testing the $70-per-barrel mark. We must remain nimble and keep stop-losses tight, as any sudden geopolitical escalation could quickly reverse these inventory-driven losses.
