The rupee opened firmer on Friday as USD\/INR eased to about 95.75 after touching a more than seven-week high of 96.10 a day earlier, helped by a pause in both oil and US Treasury yield moves. MCX crude for 21 September was near Rs 9,688, down from Rs 10,238 earlier in the week, easing pressure on an economy that imports a large share of its energy needs. Deutsche Bank cited improving expectations for Middle East export flows, including higher Saudi tanker loadings and increased sales from outside the Strait of Hormuz, after the East\u2011West pipeline shutdown.<\/p>\n
Bond markets also cooled. The 10-year US Treasury yield traded close to the week\u2019s low around 4.94% after reaching 5.04% on Tuesday, a 19-year high, with TD Securities pointing to hawkish Fed pricing and growth concerns as factors that could keep yields contained. On charts, USD\/INR was at 95.7755 and remained above the 20-period EMA at 95.4582, with support around 95.46 and resistance at 96.10; a break higher would refocus attention on the record area near 97.00. The Fed sets rates at eight scheduled meetings a year and targets 2% inflation alongside full employment.<\/p>\n
We see a prime buying opportunity for USD\/INR derivative traders as the pair cools down to 95.75 from its recent peak of 96.10. While the easing of oil prices and US Treasury yields has given the Indian Rupee some breathing room, the underlying upward momentum for the dollar remains strong. We recommend that traders look to build long positions on USD\/INR futures on dips close to the key support level of 95.46.<\/p>\n
Historically, India\u2019s heavy reliance on imported energy\u2014purchasing over 80% of its crude requirements from abroad\u2014means that local currency relief from lower oil prices is usually temporary. When US 10-year yields surged past 5.0% in October 2023, emerging market currencies experienced similar brief recoveries before the dollar resumed its upward climb. With current US yields holding high near 4.94%, any rupee strength should be treated as a short-term pullback rather than a permanent reversal.<\/p>\n
For options traders, we favor executing bull call spreads by buying the 95.75 call and selling the 96.50 call to capitalize on a projected move back toward 97.00. This strategy limits risk while protecting capital against sudden market swings if Middle East supply fears return. Alternatively, traders holding long futures contracts should place tight stop-loss orders just below the 95.40 mark to protect against a deeper correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
