GBP\/JPY has weakened as firmer expectations of another Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate increase bolster the yen, which has reached its strongest level against the US dollar in about six months. By contrast, the pound is weighed by a less settled Bank of England (BoE) outlook, with policymakers split on whether inflation still warrants tighter policy.<\/p>\n\n
Data in Japan have reinforced the case for higher rates: revised figures showed second-quarter growth at an annualised 1.4%, up from 1.1% previously. Markets are pricing a 0.25 percentage-point BoJ hike at the September meeting, and implied probability sits around 80%. The yen has also drawn support from the prospect of official action against disorderly moves after Japan and the US intervened earlier this year. In the UK, the BoE has kept Bank Rate at 3.75% while inflation runs at 2.9% versus a 2% target, leaving GBP\/JPY sensitive to releases including UK GDP on 11 September, the BoE decision on 17 September and the BoJ meeting the next day.<\/p>\n\n
We recommend that derivative traders position themselves for increased volatility in the GBP\/JPY pair by using short-term put options to hedge against a deeper drop. With the Bank of Japan highly likely to raise interest rates this month, the yen’s upward momentum is set to challenge key support levels. Historically, when the yen strengthens rapidly, we see a sharp unwinding of carry trades, similar to the dramatic 10% drop GBP\/JPY experienced during the market shakeup in late 2024.<\/p>\n\n
Japan’s revised Q2 GDP growth of 1.4% confirms that the economic recovery is on solid ground, giving the BoJ plenty of room to tighten monetary policy. Currently, money markets are pricing in an 80% chance of a rate hike at the upcoming September meeting. We expect this narrowing interest rate differential to keep pushing the yen stronger, supported by the memory of Japan’s massive currency interventions earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n
Meanwhile, the UK outlook is much cloudier with inflation still sticky at 2.9% and the Bank of England divided on its next move. This makes the upcoming UK GDP data on September 11 a critical trigger for sterling volatility. We advise traders to employ straddle or strangle option strategies to capture sharp moves in either direction ahead of the BoE’s rate decision on September 17.<\/p>\n\n
Looking at the technicals, GBP\/JPY is facing heavy resistance, making short-on-rally strategies highly attractive for the coming weeks. If the yen breaks through its six-month highs, we could see a rapid descent toward major support levels.
