The bank expects Banco de la Rep\u00fablica\u2019s (BanRep) hiking cycle to end soon and sees limited scope for rates to return to 2022 territory. Inflation has eased from above 13% in 2022 to 6% in 2026, reducing pressure for further tightening. On fiscal policy, expectations are for consolidation under De La Espriella, which would make it harder for Colombia to sustain the positive fiscal impulse of recent years. We believe derivative traders should position for an upward move in the USD\/COP pair over the coming weeks as the Colombian Peso’s strong run faces exhaustion. This rebound suggests that the currency’s downside is now heavily restricted, opening the door for asymmetric upside risks.<\/p>\n\n
We are seeing the end of Colombia\u2019s aggressive high-yield support as the central bank, Banco de la Rep\u00fablica, wraps up its monetary tightening. Colombia’s inflation rate has cooled significantly to around 6% in 2026 compared to the painful 13.12% peak we saw in 2022. Consequently, policymakers have been lowering the benchmark interest rate toward the 10% mark, eroding the high-yield buffer that previously protected the peso.<\/p>\n\n
On the fiscal front, we expect tighter government spending under the De La Espriella administration to replace the loose fiscal policies of the past years. This transition toward fiscal consolidation means the local economy will no longer benefit from the same level of domestic stimulus.
