The expectation is that policymakers will continue to judge current settings as supportive of growth while maintaining price stability, and that there is limited impetus to tighten policy over the next few meetings despite some market positioning.<\/p>\n\n
Inflation data are cited as consistent with a steady path. Headline inflation eased to 1.8% year on year in July 2026, the lowest reading since March, after remaining contained despite the Middle East shock. That keeps it within the authorities\u2019 2026 average forecast range of 1.5\u20132.5%, while overall growth is projected at around 5% in 2026.<\/p>\n\n

Although some market participants are betting on an imminent rate hike to reverse last year’s easing, the macroeconomic data does not support this tightening bias. We recommend taking advantage of this market disconnect by focusing on interest rate swaps and short-term ringgit derivatives.<\/p>\n\n
Our view is supported by Malaysia\u2019s highly stable inflation, which eased to a multi-month low of 1.8% in July, comfortably inside the central bank’s target range of 1.5% to 2.5%. This cooling inflation, combined with robust economic growth projected to hit nearly 5% this year, means policymakers have no immediate reason to adjust rates. Historically, when inflation remains below the 2% threshold and growth is steady, the central bank prefers to maintain stable borrowing costs to support domestic consumption.<\/p>\n\n
For fixed-income traders, we suggest receiving the fixed rate on Ringgit interest rate swaps, as short-term swap rates are currently pricing in a premium for a rate hike that is unlikely to happen. Additionally, we expect Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) yields to edge lower once the central bank confirms the hold, making long positions in bond futures highly attractive. This strategy allows us to capture gains as the market prices out these unjustified tightening expectations over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
