Head fake Definition

What Is a Head Fake in Trading?

A head fake is a false signal that leads traders to believe a particular trend is emerging, only for price to reverse and move the other way. The term is borrowed from sport, where a player feints in one direction to mislead an opponent. In markets, a head fake can trap traders into entering positions just before price turns against them.

How a Head Fake Develops

A head fake often occurs around key technical levels such as support, resistance, or a chart pattern breakout. Price appears to break out convincingly, encouraging traders to pile in, before quickly reversing back through the level. The result is a sudden move against the crowd that joined the apparent breakout.

Common Forms of Head Fakes

Type What Happens
Bull trap A false upside breakout that reverses lower
Bear trap A false downside break that reverses higher
Failed breakout Price clears a level then returns inside the range

Why Head Fakes Happen

Head fakes can be driven by thin liquidity, stop-loss hunting, or large participants triggering orders before pushing price the other way. They are more frequent during low-volume periods and around widely watched levels where many traders place similar orders.

Guarding Against False Signals

Because head fakes are designed to look convincing, no method removes them entirely. Traders can reduce exposure by waiting for a confirmed close beyond a level rather than reacting to an intrabar spike, checking whether volume supports the move, and using sensible stop placement. Position sizing also limits the damage if a breakout turns out to be false.

Staying Alert to Head Fakes

Understanding the head fake helps traders approach breakouts with healthy scepticism rather than chasing every move. Confirmation, volume analysis, and disciplined risk control turn a potential trap into a manageable scenario. On VT Markets, traders can study price behaviour around key levels to develop a steadier response to misleading signals.
