Fill Definition

What Is a Fill in Trading?

A fill signifies the successful execution of an order after it is matched with a corresponding party. In other words, it is the completion of a trade, the point at which an instruction to buy or sell an asset is actually carried out. When an order is filled, the trader has bought or sold the asset at an agreed price, and the position is reflected in their account.

How a Fill Happens

When a trader places an order, the platform seeks a matching counterparty willing to take the other side at an acceptable price. Once matched, the order is filled and the trade is recorded. In fast-moving or thin markets, the fill price can differ from the price seen when the order was placed, an effect known as slippage.

Types of Fill

Type What It Means
Full fill The entire order is executed at once
Partial fill Only part of the order is executed, the rest stays open or is cancelled
Slippage on fill The order fills at a price different from the one expected

Why Fills Matter

The quality of a fill, including how quickly and at what price an order executes, affects the outcome of a trade. In liquid markets, fills are usually fast and close to the quoted price. In less liquid conditions, orders may fill partially or at less favourable prices, which is why order type and market conditions both matter.

What Can Affect a Fill

A fill is not always at the exact price a trader expects, particularly during volatile periods or around major news, when slippage can widen. Large orders in thin markets may only fill partially or move the price as they execute. Understanding how order types behave helps traders anticipate how their instructions are likely to be carried out.

Understanding Order Fills

The fill is the moment intention becomes an actual position, making it central to how trading works in practice. Recognising the factors that influence fill price and speed helps traders choose order types that suit their goals. On VT Markets platforms, order execution is part of the everyday mechanics of managing trades.
