Yen slips after Bank of Japan hike as dissent clouds tightening path; USD/JPY tests resistance

The yen weakened broadly even after the Bank of Japan raised rates, as two policymakers dissented and backed no change, casting doubt on the pace of further tightening. The shift prompted a pullback in hawkish positioning, while USD/JPY steadied before resuming gains in Asia. Technical levels remain in focus: resistance is seen at 157.50 (R1) then 160.50 (R2), with further resistance at 162.80 (R3); support sits at 155.00 (S1), 152.10 (S2) and 149.40 (S3). Markets also await August retail sales and US industrial production, alongside remarks from Fed Vice Chair Bowman and Kansas City Fed President Schmid, while China’s PBoC sets policy in Monday’s Asian session.

US equities rose as oil prices continued to ease, while Nvidia added 2.5% and OpenAI reported six additional instances of “unexpected or concerning” model behaviour. Gold edged higher as the US dollar paused its advance, and price action is framed by 4,275 (S1) and 3,960 (S2) on the downside, then 3,600 (S3), against resistance at 4,550 (R1), 4,890 (R2) and 5,245 (R3). Gold also broke a prior downward trendline, shifting the near-term bias towards a sideways profile.

Derivative Strategies for FX, Equities, and Commodities

We advise derivative traders to position themselves for continued volatility in JPY pairs, as the Bank of Japan’s recent rate hike revealed deep internal divisions. With two policymakers dissenting, the market’s hawkish expectations have cooled, pushing the USD/JPY pair back up toward the 157.50 resistance level. We suggest utilizing options strategies, such as straddles or strangle options, to capture sharp movements in USD/JPY while protecting against sudden shifts in the BoJ’s tightening bias.

Opportunities in Equity and Commodity Markets

In the equity derivatives space, we see a strong case for cautious optimism in AI-related tech stocks, supported by solid gains from Nvidia and other tech giants pushing back against regulation. Historical data shows that Nvidia’s stock surged over 200% across 2023 and 2024, and current resilience suggests the bullish momentum remains intact despite lingering regulatory debates. Traders should consider long call options on major semiconductor and AI indices, while hedging with put options on broader indices to guard against unexpected macroeconomic shocks.

We also suggest watching the commodity derivatives market closely as oil prices fluctuate and gold hovers near critical support levels. With geopolitical tensions keeping oil supplies fragile, trading energy futures with tight stop-losses will be essential to manage rapid price swings. Meanwhile, if the US dollar’s momentum stalls further, we expect gold to find strong support and potentially resume its upward trajectory, making gold call options an attractive choice for portfolio diversification in the coming weeks.
