USD/JPY Rebounds on Higher US Yields as Markets Await US CPI for Next Rates Signal

USD/JPY has bounced as firmer US Treasury yields after US PPI and a broader USD recovery lifted the pair, while higher oil prices added to inflation concerns and further weakened Japan’s terms of trade. Attention is now on US CPI, with an upside surprise—especially in core inflation—likely to drive yields higher and keep the rebound going, whereas a softer reading could reverse recent rates repricing and support a JPY recovery. The near-term bias remains tethered to the US rates channel, even as expectations of further BOJ normalisation may limit sustained upside.

On the charts, a dragonfly doji near 154.25 preceded the rebound, though bearish momentum is still described as intact, with signs it may be fading after RSI climbed from oversold levels. Tentative bullish divergence is forming on MACD and RSI, but confirmation is pending. Key resistance is flagged at 155, aligned with the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement of the 2026 low-to-high move, and at 156.70, the 38.2% level. Support is outlined at 153 and 152.20, the 2026 low.

Volatility Drivers and Macro Headwinds

We advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in the USD/JPY pair over the coming weeks as US Treasury yields climb. With the 10-year US Treasury yield hovering near 4.2% and global oil prices rising, the Japanese Yen faces renewed pressure. We recommend closely watching these macro drivers, as they threaten Japan’s terms of trade and weaken the Yen.

To navigate this, we suggest using short-term option straddles ahead of the upcoming US CPI release. A core inflation print exceeding the market forecast of 2.9% could rapidly push USD/JPY past the 155.00 resistance level. Conversely, a softer inflation reading would likely trigger a sharp unwinding of long-dollar positions, pulling the pair down toward key support levels.

Technical Signals and Risk Management

We are starting to see early signs of a bullish divergence on the MACD and RSI charts, which suggests the Yen’s recent recovery is losing steam. Traders should manage their leverage carefully around the immediate support floor of 152.20, which is the low for 2026. If this support level breaks, we could see a quick slide toward 150.00, especially if the Bank of Japan signals more interest rate hikes.

The Bank of Japan’s rate hikes remain a powerful counterweight, with their policy rate now sitting at 0.25%. Historically, when the US-Japan yield spread narrows by just 50 basis points, the Yen has rallied by 3% to 5% against the Dollar. We believe setting tight stop-losses or using barrier options is the safest way to trade these sudden policy swings.
