Rupee jumps as RBI rolls out broad FX support package, cutting USD/INR and forward premiums

USD/INR fell 1.2%, with the rupee rising over 1% to 95.58 per dollar, after the Reserve Bank of India announced a broad FX-support package over the weekend. Measures included reintroducing a dedicated oil import window, tightening restrictions on corporate hedging, placing limits on uncovered FX transactions, banning the rebooking of cancelled derivatives, and announcing new OMO bond sales.

The steps point to a more proactive defence of the rupee and align with the central bank’s move towards a calibrated tightening stance. Near term, the measures are expected to support an INR rebound and reduce forward premiums as structural dollar demand eases. Further out, direction is expected to track oil prices, portfolio flows and broader US dollar trends.

Short-Term Strategies as Speculative Pressure Eases

As structural dollar demand eases across the market, we expect USD/INR forward premiums to decline sharply in the short term. Derivative traders should consider adjusting their positioning by unwinding over-hedged long dollar contracts and re-evaluating short INR positions. Historical data shows that similar intervention packages by the Reserve Bank of India, such as the special oil dollar windows introduced during past currency stress, successfully shaved off speculative pressure and reduced short-term volatility.

To capitalize on this initial rupee rebound, we recommend taking advantage of lower forward premiums through call options on the rupee or downside put spreads on USD/INR. Recent figures show India’s foreign exchange reserves standing strong above $600 billion, giving the central bank significant firepower to enforce its defensive ceiling. Since corporate hedging restrictions and bans on rebooking canceled derivative contracts will limit speculative volume, liquidity in exotic options may thin out, making vanilla strategies more attractive.

Risks and Medium-Term Outlook

However, traders must keep a close eye on global energy markets and broad U.S. dollar trends over the next few weeks. Crude oil accounts for nearly 25% of India’s total import bill, meaning any sudden surge in Brent crude prices could quickly erode the rupee’s policy-driven gains. We suggest utilizing tighter stop-loss limits on rupee-long positions while monitoring net foreign portfolio flows, which remain the ultimate deciding factor for medium-term currency directions.
