Gold steadies near $4,400 as softer dollar offsets oil-driven inflation and Fed hike bets

Gold rebounded on Wednesday to end a three-day decline as a softer US Dollar lent support, but gains struggled near $4,400 after the metal earlier hit a one-week low around $4,341. The dollar’s pullback followed a surge in the Japanese yen, with USD/JPY near 153.40, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) traded around 98.61, down about 0.25% and close to its weakest level since August 21. Rising energy prices also curtailed bullion’s recovery after tit-for-tat U.S.–Iran actions in the Gulf, including the reported destruction of five Iranian crude oil carriers and subsequent Iranian strikes on maritime targets.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) hovered near $93.50 a barrel, close to its highest since June 8, and is up about 4.80% this week, reinforcing concerns about inflation persistence and rates. The 10-year US Treasury yield sat around 4.80%, near its highest since November 2023, while the CME FedWatch Tool implies a 60% probability of a 25-basis-point hike next week. ADP data showed private employers added an average of 12K jobs per week to August 22, up from a revised 10K after an initial 11.75K; attention now turns to Thursday’s PPI and Friday’s CPI, plus details of a bond-buyback programme due at 15:00 GMT. Technically, XAU/USD held above the 200-period SMA at $4,356, with the 50-period SMA at $4,415 acting as resistance; RSI was 47, MACD slightly negative, while levels in view include $4,489, $4,550, $4,700 and downside support near $4,200.

Derivative Positioning and Fed Policy Expectations

We suggest derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility over the next two weeks as gold consolidates near the crucial $4,400 mark. With a 60% probability of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the September 15-16 meeting, option pricing for gold contracts is anticipating a sharp directional move. We recommend buying short-term straddles on gold (XAU/USD) to profit from a breakout regardless of which way the market swings.

The escalating military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have pushed WTI crude up 4.8% this week to $93.50, which historically acts as a double-edged sword for precious metals. While geopolitical risks normally drive safe-haven buying, the resulting energy inflation could force the Fed to keep borrowing costs higher for longer. We can look at historical precedents, like the oil shocks of the late 1970s, where surging energy costs eventually forced aggressive rate hikes that temporarily capped gold’s upside.

Technical Levels and Event-Driven Trading Strategies

Technically, we should watch the key 200-period simple moving average at $4,356 as a line in the sand for long positions. If gold breaks below this level, we advise purchasing out-of-the-money put options targeting the $4,200 support zone. Conversely, a push above the 50-period moving average at $4,415 would justify buying call options targeting $4,550.

The upcoming PPI and CPI data releases this Thursday and Friday will likely act as the final catalyst before next week’s Fed decision. Historically, US core inflation surprises have caused immediate swings of 1.5% to 2% in the price of gold on the day of the release. We must keep our overall risk exposure limited ahead of these reports and focus on vertical spread strategies to mitigate rapid option premium decay.
