Gold range-bound as safe-haven bids offset firmer US inflation and looming Fed policy decision

Gold is being pulled in different directions by safe-haven demand, shifting expectations for Federal Reserve policy and moves in the US dollar. Markets are waiting to see whether fresh US inflation releases push the central bank towards a more hawkish stance. Inflation accelerated to 3.7% year-on-year in September, while core inflation was 2.6%, yet uncertainty persists over the next Fed step after Kevin Warsh offered no clear indication of an October rate hike. Middle East tensions and concerns over public finances have underpinned demand for defensive assets, although higher oil prices risk prolonging inflation pressures and complicating any pivot to policy easing.

For XAU/USD on 16 October, the fundamental picture remains mixed: a weaker US dollar, lower bond yields and ETF demand lend support, while firmer inflation and the prospect of another hike cap upside. On H4, gold completed a downswing at 4,071 USD and is correcting higher towards 4,184 USD, consolidating under 4,231 USD; a close above 4,220 USD could target 4,231 USD, while a break lower may expose 4,123 USD, then 4,060 USD and 4,022 USD, with MACD suggesting a corrective rise. On H1, the move above 4,145 USD carried price towards 4,185 USD before consolidation near 4,175 USD; a close above 4,185 USD may reach 4,220 USD, whereas a slide back through 4,123 USD would tilt risks towards 4,060 USD, with Stochastic above 50 but nearing overbought.

Strategic Outlook for Gold Derivatives

In the coming weeks, we should adopt a flexible, range-bound strategy for gold derivatives as conflicting fundamental forces pull the market in opposing directions. With annual US inflation reaching 3.7% in September and Middle East tensions sustaining safe-haven interest, upside momentum is real but heavily capped. Historically, gold rallies driven purely by geopolitical risk often experience sharp pullbacks once bond yields stabilize, which makes strict risk management essential for us right now.

Near-term resistance at $4,185 and $4,220 offers us a critical zone to monitor for short-term bullish breakouts or exhaustion plays. If prices close convincingly above $4,185, we can look for quick upside opportunities toward $4,220 and $4,231, supported by recovering momentum indicators. However, because the broader four-hour chart trend remains downward, we must avoid over-leveraging on upside bets near resistance.

On the downside, we need to keep a close eye on support levels at $4,145 and $4,123 to manage our downside exposure. A clear break below $4,123 would signal that the corrective bounce has ended, opening path for short positions targeting $4,060 and $4,022. Historical data from similar macroeconomic setups shows that elevated energy prices and sticky core inflation at 2.6% eventually push real yields higher, which often limits gold’s ability to sustain long-term rallies.

Aligning Strategies with Market Forces

We should align our derivative strategies with incoming US dollar shifts and bond yield movements as central bank policy expectations develop. While the lack of an immediate rate hike signal from the Federal Reserve has temporarily relieved pressure on gold, unexpected hawkish shifts remain a major risk. Tracking exchange-traded fund inflows alongside daily Treasury yield movements will give us the clearest sign on whether institutional buyers are truly backing this higher price floor.
