Dow steadies near 51,900 as oil slides and investors weigh Fed inflation cues, US-China talks

The DJIA hovered near 51,900 on Monday after its weakest week since March, tracking a renewed slide in energy. Crude Oil traded just above $95 for a fourth straight decline while Brent sat just above $100, after Donald Trump told Fox News he would probably be open to meeting Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian at the UN General Assembly; in the same interview he also floated destroying Iran or letting its economy collapse. Chevron was the biggest early loser, and lower fuel prices feed into the inflation data guiding Fed policy, where inflation was last estimated at 3.7% for July versus a 2% target.

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee cited four current inflation drivers—strong demand, tariffs, energy and other supply disruptions—while Chair Warsh has pointed to strong domestic spending and business investment; Goolsbee added that artificial intelligence spending may be outpacing supply, with cloud leaders Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet among index constituents. China’s Xi Jinping is due at the White House on Thursday, with a May agreement to buy 200 Boeing planes and talk of a trade truce from October 2025 that expires about five weeks after the summit; Trump has said the order could rise to 750. Markets also await S&P Global flash PMIs on Wednesday at 13:45 GMT (manufacturing 53.5 vs 53.9; services 56 vs 56.5) and durable goods on Friday at 12:30 GMT (-0.3% vs 1.1; ex-transport 0.6% vs 0.4), while technical levels sit near resistance just above 52,100, the 50-day EMA near 52,600, and support at 51,750, just under 51,500 and near 51,200; Stoch RSI is around 23, with a close above 52,200 countering the bearish setup.

Equities and Index Derivatives Outlook

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average struggling near 51,900 and holding a bearish bias below 52,100, we recommend derivative traders focus on near-term put options. Historically, when the index fails to break its 50-day moving average during a period of monetary tightening, it often drops to test lower support levels. Buying put options targeting 51,500 and 51,200 allows us to capitalize on this downward momentum while hedging against further equity weakness.

The high-stakes meeting between President Xi and President Trump on Thursday makes Boeing and Apple prime targets for equity option traders. During previous US-China trade negotiations, Boeing shares frequently swung by more than 6% in the week of major announcements. To position for this binary event, we favor buying out-of-the-money call options on Boeing to capture any positive confirmation of the 200-jet delivery schedule.

Commodities and Treasury Market Strategies

Crude oil’s drop to around $95 presents a highly volatile setup for energy derivatives, especially with diplomatic talks at the UN General Assembly. Historically, political optimism with Iran has temporarily depressed oil prices by 5% to 10% before failed talks or supply realities sparked a sharp rebound. We should consider long straddles on Brent or West Texas Intermediate options to profit from the heavy price swings expected after the summit.

This week’s flash PMI and durable goods data will heavily influence interest rate futures as the Fed keeps its focus on strong consumer spending. Historically, service PMI readings above 55 consistently support a hawkish stance from central bankers, which keeps borrowing costs high. We suggest trading short-term Treasury options to position for higher interest rates if Wednesday’s data shows the economy is still running hot.
